Title: Hate for the Pizza Cats
Post by: NeoMikey on October 11, 2007, 02:10:22 am
Whoah, whoah!!  Don't worry, ladies and gents, I'm not starting a flame war.  Please don't misunderstand me, because I am and will still always be a huge fan of our beloved SPC (*rubber stamps "FAN" onto his screenname*), but I'm interested in something.

See, the Samurai Pizza Cats is partly revered by us, because of the fantastic writing that it has, not to mention the great plot worked in despite the complete lack of any kind of translated script.  However, there are always the anime purists who hate any and EVERYthing that isn't the original Japanese dialog.  While I can understand this in some instances, like when the English version threatens to make your ears bleed (Bubblegum Crisis, whyyyyy?!) or the script is butchered for a second-rate piece of garbage (G-Force, and please don't hate me...!), I don't believe the Pizza Cats are worthy of such ire.  Generally when I've been walking around anime cons in cosplay, I've only heard good comments and memories from people about the series (generally accompanied with, "I wish they'd release a boxed set," to which I generally direct them to YouTube and here), yet I've also heard of people who say it is an unholy anime, desecrating everything that anime purists stand for, and is one of the worst animes out there in existence.  EVER!

So, without naming of names, please share the negative things you've heard from people over the years about the Pizza Cats.  Yes, they're likely wrong, but I'm still curious!  Let's hear the criticism of the Pizza Cats!

And those people are usually Naruto and/or Full Metal Alchemist whores.

I'm still waiting for Tim (a good friend of mine) to get back to me about his opinion on SPC. He's really fussy when it comes to anime. The only anime (out of all 20something of my suggestions over the past year) that he liked was 'Fooly Cooly'. He even shunned Tenchi, he's that pinickity! :O

Both I and my older brother used to watch SPC, and we were both equally fanatic about the show. He was still equally fanatic when it was re-aired in '97 at 2 in the morning, and we would both sneak down to watch it again. (Our parents caught us once because we were laughing too much)

Fast-forward to the present. Over time we both kinda had forgotten about the show, until another friend of mine had reminded me of its existence. Remembering how much I loved SPC, I ventured out online to see what I could find about it on the net. My renewed enthusiasm for the show began when I found this place and downloadable episodes. My brother thought it was cool at first, but then I watched a few episodes with him.

I guess back in the day, we were too young to recognize the add-lib style of humour the show had. So, after watching the episodes, we were both polarized in our opinions. While I was still entertained by the "improvised" humour, my brother, being a bit of a purist, was not.

The discovery of the episodes and this forum made me a bit nutty. I was crazed for it. I know my brother won't like anything if it's over-hyped. So I guess because I'm obsessed with SPC, he hates it.

So now I watch episodes and audio plays when he's not home, else I get ridiculed for it.

Fortunately, I've never seen anyone diss the Samurai Pizza Cats for any reason.

If they did, of course, I'd give them a one-way ticket to you-know-what Island.  >:(

You make it sound so easy. I try doing that, but he just walks away and says: "You're retarded".

And when he sees me on these forums he says: "Are you talking to your GAY Pizza Cat friends again?"

There really is nothing I can do about it.

... except bashing him over the head multiple times with an inflatable mallet!  :D

It's very fun and stings like a B*tch!

That argument doesn't hold up. We both watched Power Rangers. And we both think it's retarded now. Point is: we all have the right to regret watching the things we watched as children.

2. tell him...At Least i HAVE a girlfriend :D (Francine :D)

That kinda sucks. I don't have a girlfriend. And he'll turn it around and say: "Yah! Francine's the closest thing to a girlfriend you'll ever get."

He doesn't have a girlfriend either. So...  :P.

3. go all Polly Esther on him & WHACK him with a frying pan....oh man the pain the SWEET pain

And THAT'S called murder.

"Gay" is a word that inarticulate kids use to describe things they don't like. The solution is to throw it back in their face. Whenever they call something "gay", ask them why (in a very loud voice, preferably) they think it's homosexual. EX:

"Har har. Are you talking to your GAY SPC friends again?"

"DID YOU SAY 'HOMOSEXUAL', (his name)?? WHY ARE YOU ASKING ME/TALKING TO ME ABOUT HOMOSEXUAL STUFF? IT'S MAKING ME UNCOMFORTABLE."

This works especially well if your parents are within earshot.  8)

Fortunately, I never had an older brother. I WAS the oldest, and even though I never used the word "gay" like that, there were a lot of kids in school who did. It drove me nuts.

Sorry for taking this a bit off-topic. Thankfully, my brother is the only person I know who is aware of SPC and hates it. All my other friends think it's awsome. They're just not as fanatic about it as I am.

On the subject of turning his back on SPC, I once told my brother: "Soon, the Great Journey will begin. But, when it does, the weight of your heresy will stay your feet... and you shall be left behind."

Well. When I was in an anime club at college. I mentioned this and they all said it's one of the worst translated episodes ever. I even mentioned I do have some downloaded KNT episodes and they're translated. BUt, they still don't want to view it. Not sure now as I hadn't contacted them for four years. Eh. Maybe I'll ask around at the next anime con. *shrugs*

Andy (The one who can't believe those young moronic so called "pure" anime fans.)

If they call themselve pure. Could they at least cosplay in a costume to other animes besides Naruto and other current animes. >.<

I rarely talk to anyone besides SPC fans about SPC but when I do it is either "I LOVED THAT SHOW!" or the dreaded anime know it all who says "SPC is an American bastardization of such and such blah blah blah...."

I have always liked SPC because it is not like other anime(s).  The idea of liking something just because it is anime never caught on with me, good shows did, whether they were from Japan, the U.S., or Antarctica.  SPC is probably blasphemous to "anime snobs" because it is a creative take on Japanimation with quirky humor and a focus on entertainment, not a word for word translation of the original script. Let them hate it, i like it, you like it, that's all that counts.

Same here. I like anime when it's good to watch. Not because it's anime.
I also don't like the purists who say American cartoons are "stealing" from anime. I don't see any problem with taking what clearly works in anime and adopting it for your own animation style.

When an animation is produced in France, we call it a cartoon.

And when Family Guy is displayed on my TV, I call it crap. And then change the channel.

You see? It all fits together.  ;-)

Ha!  Nice.  Although I don't hate Family Guy quite that much, I do subscribe to Trey Parker's theory of how they write the episodes.

Almost no one I know likes the Pizza Cats as much as I do, although one guy I lent my DVD to decided to torrent the entire series that same night.  The series is so abstract, no matter which language it's in, that it's hard for a lot of people to get unless they're very swift on the uptake.  In the English version, the jokes are so rapid-fire that you can miss a lot of them unless you're really thinking fast.  Kind of like how Arrested Development worked, really.

Yeah, really. Basically it is a cartoon, after all. Family Guy...? It's a hit-or-miss for me. I don't like Brian at all, he's too clever.  >:[ Gotta hand it to Matt Stone and Trey Parker, the South Park guys for ripping on Family Guy in a two part episode; they were acutally given flowers by creators of the Simpsons and King of the Hill as a way of saying 'congratulations for knocking on such a craptacular series'. It's that big a deal!

I remember watching SPC when it aired for the second time a few years later and I couldn't watch another second of it.  Perhaps it is because the main language at school was "point out the obvious(ish)".  :/  After watching the episodes recently, although I found some of the episodes with some plot in them give a good reason to watch them again, I often found myself staring blankly at the screen at some of the humor.

I'm sure people only watch what is aimed at their perception of an "adult", otherwise they wouldn't watch (and mimic) it.

I just love SPC with half my heart (The other half is my love for humor) and I find it better than KNT, people that go to anime conventions are freaks, just ignore them.

just play them...make it public...not private...& do it to ANNOY HIM...cos he hates it!

You make it sound so easy. I try doing that, but he just walks away and says: "You're retarded".

Just keep saying "Your brother is retarded" till he becomes crazy.
