Title: 3D Pizza Cats
Post by: Expresso on April 26, 2009, 11:44:01 am
Well I decided to start a new thread to keep track of my progress on my revived 3D Speedy project.
To celebrate this topic's creation I offer up a short youtube clip.

Very nice! You managed to get the movement of the shoulder pads to look quite natural, that's something that I've been wondering about how to do for my own modelling attempts (which still haven't really gotten anywhere... I just spend a lot of time thinking about how I might go about making them work, rather than actually working on them :P). If you do end up doing Violet or Francine, I'll be interested in seeing how you make their kimonos work, as that's another feature I've done a lot of wondering about.

It's funny you should say that =)
Actually I'm not concerned with the kimono. Though it may just be the bliss of ignorance and short-sightedness at this point!
I just needed to take a break from Speedy. Animation is fun and really satisfying when you get something looking how you wanted, but I'm a painter/illustrator/craftsman first.

Little update. I'm probably gonna go back to try and finish up Speedy's various animations before I work too much more on Vi here. I'm pretty happy with how she's progressing though.

woa, I think I'm starting to be prehistoric with my paintings, this looks so good, only the cheecks look a little strange, but the rest is very good, what is actually the idea of this 3D, 'r you goin to make your own game :P??
or is it only for WW?

Yeah everything still needs a lot more work. Her cheeks are a bit off still, mostly I was just happy after getting her eyes filled in to see a much better character likeness.
For now, everything is just going to be put into a warcraft 3 map, but the possibility to use them for other things is always open.

Really amazing and great really its awesome your doing this, I hope its gonna be a for an "Anime Wars" or "Dota" styled character battle map or something :3
Also any plans to do the other cats and BB  or anything else?

Title: Re: 3D Pizza Cats

I think the next model I work on will either be BadBird or a ninja crow. I don't really have a plan for the map other than I'm thinking yeah, hero tavern for good guys and bad guys, and the map would be edoropolis with maybe a counter for giant monster attacks / pizza orders? Fight your way through ninja crows to deliver the pizza, get money/experience, defeat the monster before he destroys the Pizza Cat/Palace? Yeah..

No no, not like Metal Slug which is a platformer. This is Warcraft 3 which the map would be like a hack n slash RPG like Diablo.

Well I wish there were (subjunctive form! English teacher! AAAAH) some open-source 3D game development tool like the world editor without having to own a licensed copy of warcraft 3 to play games on it. Really it seems Blizzard could just carry-over a few files and make a tool for that and just have the developers pay a (small? "justified"?) fee to create and publish, then users could just download the game data files.

As for a progress update, I was working on tweaking Vi's feet and then worked back up under her kimono. Maybe I will post that on nihonbare later...
Low-poly super-deformed anthropomorphic nude bunny princess. Great piece for a portfolio.

It's great to see you doing Pizza Cat fanart and stuff again, Ex. ^_^

Now I wish I'd kept up with that 3D modeling program I was studying a few years ago.

Title: Re: 3D Pizza Cats
Post by: Expresso on May 11, 2009, 11:43:01 am
Worked on Vi's textures some. Actually most of the time was spent UVW mapping (for those who know) I'm really terrible at it so I just go along at an incredibly slow pace. I think I have to work on these until I've developed a much more efficient work flow. But I suppose this is only my second time so I can't expect that much from myself.

Title: Re: 3D Pizza Cats
Post by: felineki on May 11, 2009, 11:54:09 pm
Looks like it's coming along very nicely. Out of curiosity, what software are you using for these?

Out of curiosity, what software are you using for these?

I use 3ds max version 5.1. I somehow got it working on Vista.

And for Vi, I think normally she'll have a sweet face on, but maybe for her profile animations she can be scary at random intervals? =)
I also want to animate her "come hither" tease in the KNT opening. Which would be coming full circle as I think that was one of the first SPC fan art things I did? lolz oh that time gone by.

Title: Re: 3D Pizza Cats
Post by: Expresso on May 16, 2009, 12:39:16 pm
I have Violet pretty much finished, just a few tweeks left and then she'll be all set for animation. I have to fix a kink in her ear setup, and I'll probably have to trial and error a few things with her kimono when she's running, but I have a plan in place so we'll see how that goes. I haven't been getting so much progress done because my (rather new) mouse is already crapping out and double-clicking like a crazy thing. I'm pretty sure Logitech used to build good mice... This is the second one that's gone to s*** in less than a year. Hopefully I can get a replacement since they have pretty decent warranties.

Title: Re: 3D Pizza Cats
Post by: Expresso on May 19, 2009, 09:46:13 am
I'm mulling over what type of "personality" to animate the princess with. Here's a basic list of animations needed for each model:

Stand
Walk
Attack
Spell
Death

Also, weapon of choice? Naginata? Her mom's bazooka?

Title: Re: 3D Pizza Cats
Post by: sjonnoh on May 19, 2009, 02:45:58 pm
wel, she always uses a naginata so.....

btw shouldn't you also add "laugh" to the animating list?? :)

Title: Re: 3D Pizza Cats
Post by: Expresso on May 20, 2009, 06:58:51 am
I'm gonna do the omgzsheisscary expression when she attacks. I just need to add new geometry for angry eyes and swap them out when needed. Maybe could do the blink/wink thing for spell, not sure what else would work good. Maybe just another angry face with shouting and scariness? it should be quite gestural for the action as the face isn't clearly visible in game. For one of the profile animation's I'm definitely going to have her do the blink/wink.

edit: Laugh can be one of the Stand animations set at a lower interval.

Title: Re: 3D Pizza Cats

So, is this animation done via Bone manipulation or target morphs? Either way, the animation's pretty well done and it looks low poly enough to be in-game acceptable. Could use a bit of tweaking in the particle effects department.  ;-)

Speedy is rigged with a biped skeleton i built myself. Vi is currently rigged now as well but I'm not satisfied with her mesh and texture yet so it's all kind of just waiting on each part. As for particles, there aren't any..? Or is that what you meant, in which case, where would they be used?

Actually, I was poking at the special effects in general. If not particles, then what are you using for the energy flowing off the sword? My next guess would be a soft body mesh of some kind...

If I could play in a three-dimensional version of Little Tokyo, I'd be the happiest little kitty for the rest of my life...which is difficult since I'm technically a crow.

dont we all have a bit of a crow in us

Oh I see, sorry. That's called a ribbon emitter in the warcraft 3 engine, maybe it technically is/isn't a particle. Tris are created following the movement of the object. It's just a single texture with wavy lines, and as the tris are produced/decay the texture "flows" during the process, a cute trick I figured out on accident.

Harmonex: Haha. Well here's about the extents of what that was meant to imply. I was mainly just commenting on the "problems" of modeling any female character with a skirt type of outfit =)

edit: Notice how the (yet untextured) naginata is just outside of reach...

Coming from another 3D artist, I absolutely HATE those things...can never get it to work properly and soon I lose the object from my screen. Then I have to hit the view reset button and start from square one again. Personally, I'd stick with my mouse...

I sat down and did some pizza cat work today, yay! Still have his hands and to fit a few pieces together better. Spent about 4 hours modeling (I work very slowly..) and  just now I spent about an hour tweaking a few things on him, mainly the beak and chest area and I'm still not sure. Textures would help a lot I suppose. If anyone thinks something looks off let me know, fresh eyes are very welcome.

That crow model is very nice...it seems fairly low poly. Get some hands/claws on those arms and you could probably insert them into a game engine. Unfortunately, I'm not a very good texture artist so I probably couldn't help you in that department...I'm only good with models.

Title: Re: 3D Pizza Cats
Post by: Expresso on December 28, 2009, 10:31:28 pm
Yes, it's low poly. In the same vein as the Speedy and Vi posted earlier in this thread. I'm not working with a specific budget, but under 2k tris per model is the goal I suppose. Ninja Crow is 750 now without much optimization. Thanks for the comments, guys. After looking at it again I'm pretty happy with the silhouettes. Just gotta finish up his hands and model a katana, then on to texturing =D

Razgrizblaze1: do you have any 3d work to show? Thanks for the offer but I don't think I'll be wanting any help with this silly project for now.

Yes, I do have some 3D works...none of it is SPC related however. (Hence why I never post it) It's mostly sci-fi stuff and whatever else I want to dabble in at the time...ranging from high poly movie-quality models (which only gets so far) to low poly game models to test in the Blender Game Engine. My current spare time project is to compile a library of nurnies for spaceships and other sci-fi type things. If you want, I could post some of the WiPs... ;]

And...well, needed or not, you're welcome to ask me for assistance if you should ever need it. (assuming we can get past obvious compatibility issues)

Does anyone have a good scan of a cel of a ninja crow? I tried googling for SPC cel scans but there isn't much out there anymore it seems.

I think the next character will have to be a girl, this way I can keep the balance =D So I suppose it's Polly or Francine (or Lucille?)

I have quite a few cel scans on my other hard drive. I'll take a look once I get it hooked up again, but it might be a few days or so.

As far as the next character, I think Lucille would be interesting, with all the opening missile hatches and such.

Using the models to make a first person/third person game with the source engine would be awesome, don't get me wrong. But suggesting putting them in Garry's Mod gives everyone the assumption of making all the same tired stuff you see in those videos. It's not in the spirit of the show, KNT or SPC. Heavy Weapons Guy mowing down Ninja Crows would maybe be fun for some people for a few minutes. Then what?

Wow, much better than the other sources I currently have, thanks Felineki!
The next character (after female) will either be Guido or Bad Bird, I guess it's a toss up. If I wanted to make the map I could use a green colored Ninja Crow as a BB stand-in, or a blue colored Speedy for a Guido stand-in, so I dunno what I'll choose yet =D

Looking at that second to last image gave me an idea. Are there other common costume the Ninja Crows wear (that carry over episode to episode?) like the traveler garbs or something similar? Just thinking for the game to break up the monotony of copy paste models.

Cause that would just be tainting them and all out degrading, not to mention the horrible gory fates that would befall our favorite felines...so no thanks.

Well, there goes my idea of a Pizza cat source engine game  :/

I think everything other than the standard Ninja Crow get-up is on a single episode basis.

Well that's fine, I'd get too sick looking at them anyway =D

Progress update: Still have some of the body to texture, and then I want to rework the hands and wing backpack a bit, but coming along now.

nice looking.. )  how much polygons?

Right now it's at 912 tris, 541 polygons. I know I could cut it down a lot with some optimization, but I'm not really shooting for a sub-500 model since it's not intended as a true "low-poly" model. I actually should decide to do that or just go higher poly for the heck of it, since I'm limiting myself but without any real good reason. I guess I'm just trying to stick with the same style that I started with Speedy. Having more rounded edges would be nice if I were ever to put these into a more modern engine, but of course this has already been brought up earlier in the thread.

it very nice for mobile game engines, like Unity Iphone.. you can make good platformer with this characters. )

The color and texture's looking great. Nice to see the wireframe, too.

Sure, it's just a matter of setting up the cameras at each side and rendering out the frames. Donkey Kong Country and Diablo are popular examples of doing this. It's not too hard to do except for cleaning up the edges so you don't have "jaggies". With technology improving though you can make sprite sheets now with full alpha channels for really smooth edges (I've been toying with the concept myself)

Would you want something I could whip up quickly for testing purposes?

what software you using to do this mate?

I am liking what you are doing alot

I am doing little tokyo in 3D, as a side project while i'm out of the country, if you could let me know your scale/units i can rescale them to match your characters.

Also it is quite easy to input them to source. if you use 3dsmax, you can just import the whole of little tokyo! and your characters in.

Let me know, i've not bothered with the characters yet, as i'm more a scene modeller than a character one.

Neko.

I'm just using 3ds max 5, got it a long long time ago. I'm curious about using Blender since the 2.5 alpha was released.
I've just been working to Warcraft 3 scale, which is about 100 units tall for an average character. Of course, in WC3 the buildings aren't all that much taller than the characters =P

Do you have any screen shots or renders of your little tokyo? I was planning on modeling the palace at least at some point.

Click speedy then use keyboard arrow keys to look at the different views.

PS how do I get the flash tag to work? =(

Haven't done a whole lot recently but I did manage to finish Ninja Crow enough to be able to import him into the WC3 editor and take a silly picture

mmm i wish you were using something a bit more modern -_-

I'm on Max 2009 - Retail Version. If you like i can do some renders of Little Tokyo for you if people prefer... i've got quite a bit of it done now i guess, though as there isn't really a map.. it's quite hard to plan!

Any ideas?
