Title: Trouble accessing Edo
Post by: KyoZaber on October 27, 2010, 12:12:52 am
Folks, just thought I'd post the question here since it kinda caught me off-guard.
Did any of you experience problems accessing the ol' forum last night around 10:00 pm CST?

I am just wondering since I wasn't able to access it myself.  :O

I just had problems for what I think was about 25 minutes.

The time period was approximately from 10:15 pm CST to 10:40 pm CST.

I'm going to have to start keeping an eye on this... Not that I can do anything about it. Just want to keep track of it.

Not fully glad cause of the problems everyone else is having, but glad.

I had problems with accessing it for the last 24 hours. It lasted from about 1:15 am yesterday morning until... well... now. O_o
Yep... To quote Elmer Fudd : "There's somefin scrwooey awound here..."

Any ideas what it could be, Kyo? I've noticed this issue as well... and I'm stumped.

Yeah, I had that problem too. I couldn't access the site since Wednesday night.

There's been other times when I couldn't access the site.

Lol, I doubt that.

Anyways, I too have been having some problems here and there with accessing the site. However, it seems to have finished with its rebellion... for now.

Kyo, I moved this topic here because I think this section is a better place for it.

Anyway, I've had problems like this now and then, but it's been going on for a long time. I always thought it was regular downtime for maintenance or something like that. Ironically enough, when I originally went to post this message, the site was down. Seems like it's happening more frequently than it used to. I guess the only way we'll know for sure what's going on is if someone asks Purrcat about it.

There have been several unexplainable servercrashes lately, some of which I only noticed the next day or so  :-\ And then sometimes whatever it was started again, causing extra downtime..
I sometimes see strange stuff in logs, but that's pretty much business as usual on an internet server.. Heh, at this moment it looks like someone is making a complete copy of the forums.

I have been planning to move edoropolis.org to a new server, but it has been a little work intensive since it has been running so long without anything other than bugfix-upgrades and just 1 major OS upgrade.. What was perfectly normal has 8 years on become a pretty weird config, so the whole change needs to be tested a bit more than usual.
I have the time right now, and it's becoming a lot more urgent, so expect the move to be soon.

Heh sorry for not correcting my post; at first glance it looked like someone was making a copy of the forum, but it wasn't that after all. Not something that'd cause instability though ;)

I almost had the thought that about over a few weeks we would see a site with the name : http://www.edoropolisII.org/forums or something like that...
and when you say you're moving this site, it also means it'll get a different name, right?

Title: Re: Trouble accessing Edo
Post by: Purrcat on November 09, 2010, 01:29:54 pm
No new name, no hasstles, not even downtime if I plan it correctly, just new & faster hardware which will hopefully not crash as much as this one has done lately. The current server has been running non-stop for over 5 years now, if I'm not mistaken: it's about time to upgrade and it seems I can't postpone any longer ;)

To sum it up: the move will not be noticable by end-users in any way except maybe a minor speed increase.

EDIT: 8 years ain't 5 years, so to clarify: current hardware has ran for 5 years or more, but the config and files were just copied over from the server before it, which also ran for some years.

Maybe you could have one of those chat boxes on the front page too if your upgrading the site

CHAAAAANGGEEEEEEE

;)

Seems like moving the webpages, modernizing the config and re-configuring the forum databases went OK. Step one is done then.
I expect there'll be some problems with automated email at this point, but I'll look into that tomorrow.

If there's anything that isn't working anymore, please post in this thread or mail me directly at purrcat@edoropolis.org . Oh BTW: at the moment FTP is disabled, so that's a known problem.

Title: Re: Trouble accessing Edo

FTP and mail services should now also work correctly again. If you encounter any trouble it's something I missed so please post it here, PM me or mail me.
Edoropolis.org is now completely moved and instabilities should be over now, so if you can't access the forums or any other part of edoropolis.org , please also let me know.

What?

I believe sjonnoh is talking about an instant messenger such as MSN, Steam chat, Facebook chat, IM, etc.

no, not those kinda. I ment those which you sometimes find at some internet site.
something like this:
http://www.watchanimeon.com/shinryaku-ika-musume-episode-6/ (http://www.watchanimeon.com/shinryaku-ika-musume-episode-6/)

it's below the episode, on the left....only I remember that I've seen one with sound when someone was posting something.

The site is now loading faster for me - that`s good!

sjonnoh,
The chat boxes doesn`t necessary make any sound when someone is posting. See the chat at http://spc.0sites.net/ (chat widget is from http://www.shoutmix.com/main/) - There is no sound when I add a reply.

I went to look on here last week and it told me I'd been banned.  There weren't any emails about it in any of my accounts and I knew I hadn't said or done anything that would've got me in trouble, so I asked Violet about it and she said the same thing had happened to her the week before.  Did anyone else get this?

It's becuase this site got pounded heavy with spam a moth ago, so KyoZaber deleted and banned tons of accounts, so Violet and you, LadyFlame, were temporary banned accidently.

It's pretty much as Noah said. We had a serious SPAM Bot registration problem where they were registering new accounts multiple times per minute.
Here's a post I made on the day I was fighting it... http://www.edoropolis.org/forums/index.php?topic=3002.msg45043#msg45043 (http://www.edoropolis.org/forums/index.php?topic=3002.msg45043#msg45043)

In the end we had 364 Bans / Deletions, and registration is down while we look at alternative bot prevention tools.

In my attempt to quash the bots I was performing various bans that hit both you and Princess Vi. Those offending bans have since then been removed.
My sincere apologies for catching you in the crossfire during that moment. The ban was never meant for you, you have done nothing wrong.

For some reason the site was down, so I (and probaly the rest of you) couldn't visit the site, all well, atleast it's all over now.

The site thinks I am a spambot, I am bit tired of typing simple math equation results every time I want to get here.

Title: Re: Trouble accessing Edo
Post by: Purrcat on June 26, 2011, 06:46:25 am
How long have you been getting these math questions now?

The problem isn't our site thinking you're a spambot, but projecthoneypot.com having gotten reports about the IP address assigned to you at the moment. This should resolve itself, but it seems like the last time you were reassigned an IP address, the previous user had heck of a time dumping nonsense on the internet.. The more severe the spammer, the longer it takes before for the IP is accepted again without stupid math questions.
Although I would have expected your IP would be sort of whitelisted since you proved you're no spambot. Does it happen every time you visit EE? Or once every visit, after which clicking through EE pages is without spambot checks for a while?

It does happen once in a while. I had a trouble with my g-mail account being hacked a few years ago.

Now about ftp access, whats the default port I should use?

Title: Re: Trouble accessing Edo
Post by: Purrcat on December 03, 2012, 12:18:29 am
the usual, port 21. Best not to touch the defaults, they should be OK. The only thing worth checking/toggling is "FTP Passive mode", and then only if up- or downloads through FTP don't work ;)

I've never gotten the error. I do wonder if there's anything that can be done to fix it.

I'm also used to checking this website on a regular basis. I love this website and I've been a member since 2010. I'm used to coming here.

I wonder how many people are having this issue.

Honestly, I do hope that people will come back. I like this place, and I would definitely hate seeing it go away completely.

Lol, right? I mean, it is what it is. I still love coming here. I also still love the SPC, and a big part of that is indeed nostalgia (a lot of great memories are attached to it).

Ditto that. Now if I could only set aside some time to watch the rest of my KNT collection, that would be peachy.  :)

On a side note, judging by the lack of recent posts in this thread, I can only assume the website's permanently running again. I wonder just how long that problem was carrying on for.

Right? How is KNT as a whole, BTW? I am fine with eventually getting the collection on DVD/Blu-Ray, but I have to know that I'll like it.

I honestly have no idea. I just hope that this place will have a resurgence of sorts.
