Edoropolis Emporium

Some of you may have already noticed that some of the SPC/KNT episodes contain hidden images, typically placed inside scenes where there is lots of flashing movement on screen (explosions for example). Since these images are being shown for only one frame and there are 30 frames shown in a second, you have to pause your player before such scene and advance frame by frame to reveal it.

Here are all the images I have managed to find so far:

I've noticed these and there are many mor out there.
I swear I saw Marilyn Monroe in the "The SPC working in Suberbs" episode. Just after Polly gives a knuckles sandwich to a rude walrus.

I remember seeing Marilyn Monroe too, way back when the show was still on the air. One of those little details that just sticks with you. :D

Those are really cute, thanks for posting them. I'm trying to transcribe the text on the top one, but I'm having a bit of difficulty picking out some of the characters (yeah, I'm a total n00b at Japanese, I just know a tiny bit from my anime/video game hobbies...)

Some of the still frames are quite interesting. I love the Francine one at the top from GBB.

I did notice the Ms.Monroe one a while ago, and while I don't recall many more, it would be interesting to see what other surprises lay hidden beneath SPC's surface.

Yeah, that screenshot I posted was a bit blurry. I replaced it with clearer one taken from the corresponding KNT episode.

It's written: "kyou no otama ni kami ga aru!", or in English: "Otama has hair today!". And what a beautiful hair indeed!

Ah, thanks a lot! I had gotten "kyou no otama ni (?) ga aru!", couldn't quite make out that "kami". And she does look adorable like that. :francine:

That kanji is difficult to be realized, since it's deformed. The real form of kami is:

Interesting. I have been watching that scene again and again in slow-motion but can't seem to find that frame no matter what :( Did you find it from SPC or KNT version?

I watched the SPC version last night, and it appears they removed it. It's only in the KNT version.

Kind of odd that they would remove this, but leave in the "Kyou no Otama ni kami ga aru" one in Gender Bender Butterflies. Especially considering that the latter is a very random and obscure joke, while the former is basically just restating what's already going on in the scene.

I've exchanged a few emails with SPC producer Andy Thomas, and he had mentioned that they had tried to remove or alter scenes with Japanese text in them when making the English version, including hidden frames.  Why?  Because nobody could read them.  There was even some concern that the estate of Marlyn Monroe might sue over the use of her picture in a hidden frame, but in the end it was decided it wasn't worth the trouble to try and remove it.

The small text seems to be "dou da yo omee!!" ((どうーだよ  おめーっ！！) which translates loosely to "Hey,  what are you thinking?".

Hiya!  I'm new here (in case you were wondering), but I noticed something in the episode where Speedy and Emperor Fred are exiled.  While riding the shark right after it pulls Speedy under after he notices Princess Vi's ship, a little sign appears by Speedy's head.  It says "Chotto mate kora!" which means "Wait a minute!" or "Stop!"
I think it's somewhere around 7:40?

Ah, yeah that was so that you could tell what he was saying, since he was underwater and hence his voice was all gurgly. I believe I have a screencap of that one actually, let me check. Yep, here it is:

Something similar happens with Bad Bird/Karamaru on two occasions, one in which he's hanging from a ledge by the upper half of his beak, and another when he jaw became locked in place because he opened it too wide while laughing.

From the first episode. This is a frame from the series of flashing images that occurs when Guido/Sukashii gets run over by the cart during the sequence where he and Speedy/Yattarou are fighting over the pizza that's supposed to be delivered. You can see Guido's/Sukashii's eyes, nose and mouth rather clearly. The red text reads "itai", which literally means "painful", but is often used as an exclamation by someone who is being hurt, just like we might say "Ow!" or "Ouch!" in English.

Noticed this when I watched 'Polly's Magical Flute' today. This piece of text appeared exactly when Polly's hug breaks the mysterious stranger's spine. Exact time was 8 minutes 15 seconds:

Heh, I don't have the exact screenshot but I copied it as best as I could. I guess it could mean 'snap' or 'crack' to show the impact of Polly's hug. It's one of the few hidden frames that still exists in the SPC version.

It's a sound effect "baki-!", sort of like "snap!".

It's in Guido's imagination, "showing" how Polly got her flute. It only shows the outline of the cat-- and his mouth while he speaks.

"Take this flute, funny-face, as an token of my love," or something around those lines.

An' don't forget to mention that he is pretty tall, too. Tall, dark stranger - even more so than Guido!!

Here's an interesting frame I found in "Cold and Crabby in Little Tokyo"/"Daibouken! Zekkouchou wo Sagase". As the cats land on Bad Bird/Karamaru, you can see that his eye actually pops out of its socket, and cables are visible.

This supports the point of view of the animaloids being less organic but more mechanical (perhaps biomechanical).

I guess they are like Doraemon without his pouch, and of course, they can breed and they get older as time passes…

It still like to believe that animaloids still have organics as part of their make-up. That screenshot only proves that the connections between his eyes and his brain are mechanical (wires). This doesn't mean his whole eye is mechanical. That doesn't really matter. Optics or eyeballs; either way, Bad Bird is still Bad Bird.

I like to imagine that nanobots are responsible for helping their mechanisms coexist with their organics. Tiny little machines make sure that, when an animaloid is growing, their mechanics are modified to compensate for the biological changes.

Furthermore, reproduction is initiated entirety as an organic process (just like in us humans). As an embryo grows, the nanobots assemble the mechanical features. So when Polly Cerviche has her baby, it comes out as a brand-new baby animaloid. Aw...

In the similar line of Machadon, I imagine the animaloids being made by nanobots, like we are made of cells. About the reproduction, the father provides a nanochip with the half the program (software) for making baby, that must be combined with the program of the mother. I guess the mother's womb contain a kind of microscale factory, that produces a tiny robot which will grow like an embryo.

That does make sense, since it theoretically allows for the reproduction, growth and development, self-healing, and other such organic-like processes that Animaloids display.

After Frieda lures Bad Bird with Vi's hair pin, this frame shows up at the exact instant Vi grabs hold of him. Note Vi's little incisors. :D

I noticed the bell one watching normally.

EDIT: I think it was because the frame rate on the episode I transcoded was lowered, so it was easier to see.  :/ Guess my eyes aren't that special

I suppose that might explain some of the relationships in this show. Speedy and Guido are frequently crushing on Francine even though they're cats and she's a ram, plus Princess Vi is the child of a bunny and a...whatever the heck Emperor Fred is, even though the cross-breeding of animal species is extremely rare. Therefore, I would guess that the characters are anthropomorphic cybernetic organisms composed of nanomachines, even though they act all too human.

We've discussed that scene a bit on Nihonbare. :D Yes, it is from the KNT equivalent of "Wet and Wild Weekend". Regarding Polly and Francine, they actually had nude production drawings for that same episode, even though they never actually appear that way in the finished episode. Their bodies look pretty much like those of the extras in the above picture.

In the KNT version of Gone With the Ginzu, when Daisensei/Guru Lou is at the Pizza Cat, he inches over behind Pururun/Polly and starts rubbing her behind. This frame of her reaction flashes on screen for a split second.

This was cut from the SPC version, along with a pretty funny gag where Yattarou says he knew the sword was fake because it didn't have his name written on it, even though he writes his name on everything. To corroborate this, he displays a shuriken and a bomb that have "Yattarou" written on them.

That shot shocked me senseless. Yes, Pururun is very sexy I'll admit but for a wise-one, he really never thinks about the consequences. The thing about sensais and teachers in Japanese anime, they always tend to be a bit "corrupted" when it comes to female characters. Master Roshi of the Dragon Ball fame, Jiraiya from Naruto, and Rei/Sailor Mars' grandfather all have these qualities.

Yeah, Master Roshi's antics make for some of the funniest moments of Dragon Ball.

There were no words in KNT/SPC but they appear to be very shocked! I understand this reaction except the triple (:guido: + :polly: + :francine:) kick for :speedy:

It's like they're saying "AH!" in surprise.

I know I was looking at the earlier posts, mainly how the nude shots of the women in the bath house was the closest we'd see of Polly and Francine, but maybe someone should try to find those production drawings, and make them public, or something. Low budget!

Cel animation takes lots of time and money. Once you've realized that a mistake has been made, it would take time and money to go back and redo that cel that, given the limited budget and deadlines, should instead go to finishing other cels. Nowadays, with things being made entirely on computers, it's possible to quickly, easily, and cheaply go back and fix such errors.
