Title: Now Watching
Post by: Black Dragon on November 27, 2006, 09:21:37 pm
Somewhat similar to the "What are you listening to?" thread, in that you post what was the last movie you saw, although include a small review.

Yesterday, I watched Peter Jackson's Bad Taste for the third time. When it comes to splatter-flicks it's hard to find a bigger milestone than Bad Taste. I laugh my ass off when I think of the ignorant and unaware Tolkien-fans who are about to watch it in order to check out what Peter Jackson has done before The Lord of the Rings. If they haven't seen it, they're in for a bit of a surprise even though mere name says it all. The basic plot concerns four bumbling government agents whose job it is to rid scenic New Zealand of any alien scum that may be invading their otherwise peaceful country. After being called upon to explore an entire town that has been mysteriously deserted, the men fall upon a shocking discovery...

Bad Taste took four years, a shoestring budget, and a tiny devoted cast and crew to complete. Shooting took place mainly on weekends, while the amateurs tended to their daily lives the rest of the week. The unmitigated commitment the crew had towards the production of the film really shows, as they all must have given their utmost towards not just getting the movie complete, but making it look spectacular. Jackson's camerawork and special effects are nothing short of mind-blowing, and the fast-paced editing really gives this 16mm wonder a big-budget, professional look while still maintaining a goofy, campy feel.

Yes indeed, this movie has it all: Guns, cars, aliens, blood, intestines, blood, vomit, blood, spaceships, bazookas, blood, rubber costumes, and even exploding sheep (my personal favorite). However, it's not for those with a weak stomach (well, it is in the title, you know) or those who don't understand the intense awesomeness (yes, I realise that isn't a real word) of low-budget B-movies. But, if one wishes to explore the world of B-grade splatter flicks, I simply cannot think of a better place to start.

Bad Taste is good but Dead Alive is better IMHO. One of the best gory zombie flicks ever.  Also check out stuff by Italian director Lucio Fulci, he is mainly credited as establishing this kind of movie genre and Jackson seems to be influenced strongly by him in his early films.

Last two movies I watched were Cars and Over the Hedge. Ya... I was in the mood for some animation type stuff. :p

Both get a thumbs up, but Cars was the better of the two in my opinion.

What what what!?!

As a MASSIVE zombie movie fan, I'd have to disagree with you there. George A Romero is considered to be the creator of the zombie genre, with his cult classic Night of the Living Dead. Lucio was inspired by him and I think he directed an 'unofficial sequel.' Though, I have to agree. Lucio's work is nasty, yet satisfying. =]

I'm currently watching Lost as I missed it on Sunday.

Last movie I watched was the Davinci Code.

Ah, Bad Taste. A friend of mine lent me his DVD copy and I watched it straight away. Heh heh heh... I guess it fits comfortably in the 'splatsick' camp alongside the Evil Dead series.

I watched Borat recently. That was dead funny, yes?  =]

I wasn't talking about Fulci as the creator of the "zombie" movie genre, I was saying Fulci invented the "gore" genre of horror.  The concept of violence on top of violence for the sake of violence, not just dealing with zombies.  The first zombie film is called "White Zombie" and was released in 1932 so while Romero took took the "zombie" film to a new level, he did not create the concept.  As far as Romero's new stuff,  I think the older stuff was much better.  I think 28 Days Later is the best modern spin on the "zombie" film genre.

High Quality episodes of Samurai Pizza Cats, of course.  ;)  And a fan-sub of Galaxy Express 999.  Throw in some football and some basketball, and re-runs of South Park, Family Guy, and Futurama.  That's about it... I don't watch tons of TV these days.

Session 9 rocks some major tail.

Boooooo yeah!

The Ring is MUCH better though..

The Ring kinda disappointed me when I saw it. I was expecting, uh, something a bit creepier. The Japanese version wasn't too bad though.  ;-)

I think Session 9 is much creepier because there's really nothing supernatural about it. It is something that could feasable happen

The Grudge creeped me out though. Or, to be more specific, the creepy dead girl "crawling" down the stairs creeped me out. :p

I was creeped out by The Ring when I saw it opening night 4 years ago on the huge Cineplex Odeon theaters. I was a bit shaken up.

The Grudge was similar, it was great.

Good times, good times.

Just watched 'The Empire Strikes Back' - AGAIN! I'll never get sick of it (it was the first movie I ever saw). Going to see 'Casino Royale' this two days when it premiers in Australia, though I don't have high hopes for it. :/

Last movie I saw was The Thing on DVD. Which explains my behavior in the moments prior to reaching 1000 posts in the Longest Thread.
Not a great movie. Not a bad movie. Still a classic. I just love the atmosphere of the film.  Dread, mistrust, confusion. I actually have an idea for an episode of SPC that's based on this movie. So stay tuned for that.

Don't worry. I'll have a response to her drawing once I've got a bit o' time. :p

As for watching...

Clerks 2, plus most of the extras, was the last thing I watched. I'd post some quotes, but the language filter would ban me and kick me off of the internet.

July 28th, 1987 I was in the hospital. What a coincidence. Or... not. :p

As far as latest stuff watched:

Talladega Nights - Don't even bother unless your a huge Will Ferrell fan. There's not enough funny to make it worth watching.

Hero: Second time I've watched it, but it's still damn good. :D

Today, I watched Santa Sangre (Blood of the Saint). A surrealist horror movie by Alejandro Jodorowsky.

There isn't too much of a story to report, except that a young boy has a mother who is rather fundamentalist about her temple, Holy Blood, being destroyed. When it is, she joins with him to the circus, but becomes enraged with a big male brute and tattoo lady. Then a series of events cuts, no pun intended, the story ahead several years after the young man escapes from a mental home and rejoins with his 'armless' mother. Santa Sangre, basically, incorporates elements of the very darkly hilarious moments along with the overwhelming, visceral violent scenes that gave Jordorowsky's El Topo its following. Maybe it's not horror in the traditional sense, it does contain bizarre images such as an elephant funeral, chickens falling from the sky, and mentally handicapped kids tricked into snorting cocaine.

Anyways, it's late, so I'm not going to ramble on.

I watched "The Ring" last night for the first time. I have a tendency to not watch movies that are too hyped up until they've been out long enough. It was creepy. I did not particularly enjoy the prank of the tv "suddenly going on by itself" during the movie, or the rounded mirror I had to walk by in the dark o_o

I watched half of two movies over the holiday.

On Christmas Day, I watched the first half of Lady in the Water. I got bored and turned it off.

Last night I watched the first 45 minutes or so of Doom. I figured it couldn't have been as bad as people said it was. I was wrong.

Apparently after the film was released like 10 years ago, the TV series had ended. I still watch them on YouTube - not the movie, but all the episodes including the banned ones.

Perhaps, but Sin City and 300 are hard to compare, the only similar thing is the author Miller.

Tough call, but I would edge 300 slightly ahead of Sin City for me.

I'm going with Sin City by a long shot, just for the story alone.

300 was just 2 hours of recomfirming that 300 Spartans taking on the Persian army are badass. Plus, it was loosely based on history, so coming up with a plot for this movie (err.. comic first) probably wasn't the toughest thing to do.

This is like comparing 14k gold to 18k gold though. :p

Plus, to top it all off, Sin City has two more movies of badassery coming out. Unless they they do prequels for 300 (*gack*) it might be a bit hard to do. :p

I just saw 300 last night, and I'm going with Burkey on this one - both are kickass movies, but 300 was slightly better IMO.
