Noritaka Suzuki (aka Tenko), one of the character designers for KNT, draws KNT characters every now and then at his blog. (http://geocities.yahoo.co.jp/gl/suzukitenko) I came across his blog thanks to a reference to it at the website of Yuki Kosuzu (a Japanese KNT fan and doujinshi creator). I suppose it could just be an alternate rendering of Pururun, but it looks quite different from the rest of his drawings of Pururun on the blog. I've seen plenty of art before where one character is dressed as another, so I figured that was likely what this was.

The text with the picture of Pururun in a pan seems to refer to an urban legend about a cat and a microwave oven (maybe a Japanese variant of the urban legend about the poodle being put in a microwave oven to dry it after a bath?).

That's what makes KNT/SPC so great!  Some people have no idea how much money they are losing by not releasing the show for reruns and DVDs.  Pizza Cats fans are a loyal bunch!

Suzuki is talking about 'neko nabe'. That word sounds like 'cat dish', so the author made a drawing of Pururun being cooked. Actually 'neko nabe' is a photo/movie contest with cats taking a nap inside a earthenware pot. Check this link (http://moura.jp/culture/nekonabe/) to see more, though it's still creepy.

Wow, it must have been nice having a small talk with one of the creators of Teyandee. You think maybe we could ask him to make his own KNT stories or special mangas. Forgive me, I'm probably just holding my breath.

He's probably too busy to do much KNT-related stuff these days. In the past, he has submitted short comics and illustrations to various doujinshi. But as the show gets older, doujin projects become less frequent and less comprehensive (some of the KNT doujins from the early to mid 90's feature material from dozens of different contributors), such submissions would seem to become less likely. For now, I wouldn't expect much more than the occasional KNT-related art posted to his blog.

Yesterday Mr. Tenko published a not much happy  :O in his blog. The blog entry hasn't anything related with KNT/SPC though (he says his hair needs to be cut).

Japanese drink a lot of "energy drinks" and "energy pills", so is not that weird that someone who was "High" remebered a old show it saw as a kid and did some fan art....

Err, this is KNT's character designer we're talking about, not just someone who saw KNT as a kid. And I was referring to the fact that even within KNT, Okinu is a very minor character (a major role in one episode, and a couple of "blink and you'll miss it" cameos later).

Agreed Felineki. Seeing Ruby again is a treat. :) I especially like this rendition of her. It looks & feels more natural. I also like the wind, and the angle the picture was drawn from.

I kinda wish we got to see more of the characters like her in more of the SPC episodes. Not as a constant character, it'd just have been nice to see her in more than 2 episodes. Granted, I don't know what other trouble she could've gotten in to... However since she appears to either not like her glasses, or just forget to wear them, I can see where she'd get herself into a little more trouble here 'n there.

Wish they kept her around for more episodes, though... same with Bucky... and possibly Carla...  :'(

Tenko is complaining about the newcomer waitress of the 'Matsu' restaurant. Her service was slow and she was paying attention for the customers' talk rather for the work. Moreover, she served missoshiru soup only after Tenko has eaten almost all his lunch.

Pururun looks like a Cafe Mew Mew worker (from Tokyo Mew Mew).

The story makes sense.

Hopefully the gal who was serving him is a quick learner. I'm sure she'll pick up the pace and be able to serve him (and other customers) better in the future. If anything, hopefully the next picture like this we'll see will be of Pururun serving everything to a pleased customer.

Maybe he still has some copies of the model sheets he drew back in the day, but these look more like they were drawn from memory to me. They have sort of a spontaneous quality to them.

Good to get some KNT history from Tenko-san.  If only we could lure him and some Japanese fans to our poor forgotten Japanese EE board...

Toy companies actually do have a lot of control over the content that makes it into certain television shows; Hasbro, for example, maintained a tremendous amount of influence over what showed up in Transformers, and certain characters were created specifically so toys based on them could be sold to children.

It sounds as if Tenko was referring to the extra-topping armor upgrade when he talks about "mega up parts". I keep hearing that Bandai had a stake in the series, so it's entirely possible that this was something that was added to the plot at their insistence so they could sell action figures and model kits later on.

Yeah, the "Extra Topping" upgrade is called "Mega Up" in KNT. And Bandai was involved with KNT. The show's rights are co-owned by Tatsunoko and Sotsu Agency, the latter of which is affiliated with Bandai. All of the KNT toys and models were by Bandai, as far as I can tell. The magazine that Tatsuya Souma's KNT manga was serialized in was also published by Bandai.

I don't know if Tenko understood my question, but anyway he gave an answer. He said he got nothing about "Teyandee". His job wasn't of an animator so he only made the plans of the characters plus few illustrations.  Moreover, he thinks he watched the series like an ordinary TV viewer at that time.

He noticed some pattern emerging on the surface of a DVD with Teyandee episodes. This is an old DVD he recorded from VHS source, and just now he noticed such pattern. He suspects this would be a oxidation of data layer of the disk.

Moreover Tenko said that, with only 9 episodes, there weren't enough raw materials to work and play with. Unlike other compilations, he had impression that the 10th episode was very simple, driven merely by the narration. One of the comments wonders why a compilation episode had been made so early in the series. Would be this another KNT mystery?

I think this is a reply to my comment in Tenko's early blog entry.

In his latest post, he says it's impossible to draw a 20 years old guest character relying only on his memory. Moreover he comments about that episode, it has been taken much time owing to difficulties in defining Yankee's looks to make them somehow alike Japanese counterparts but also somehow different, and to make images from their names. He feels somehow responsible for the delay in the making of this episode, but he is unsure if the delay was due to his fault, since he worked in a location far from where the series had been produced.

It also could be a little homage to our always loved King of Pop...  :'(

He didn't do any of the animation work, he drew the character design sheets which the animators then used as reference. You can see some examples of the character design sheets here. (http://www.angelfire.com/ca/savespc/model.html) I think he also did illustrations for things like the soundtrack CDs and the VHS boxes.

I remember that some of those pictures were used at the end of the show from knt. anyway it all looks great what he makes :P

I used to have a bunch of megazords as a kid, back when the the series was one big long arc. I even had the limited edition original Megazord (which a boxed version of goes for at least $500 on E-bay) and a few others sparingly throughout the years. Next to legos, I loved playing with those things the most...

Oh, I remember seeing photos of that toy online when I was searching for Eto Rangers stuff. I guess it's supposed to be Kirinder, although it looks nothing like the one in the show. The little character faces in particular are rather creepy. And is that the Pepsi logo on its right shin? :D Funny that Tenko decided to draw it.

Usually, such forms have 4 fields:

• Name (Who wrote the Comment)

I use the http://babelfish.yahoo.com/ to translate the names of the fields to English. We have:
1) Name (Up to 20 letters)
2) E-Mail
3) URL (for example http://www.yahoo.co.jp) = your homepage if you have it.
4) Comment (up to 400 letters).

Perhaps it might be a better idea for one of us who can understand Japanese to send him a message on behalf of our community.

I think thats a good idea, just 1 person sends him a message like: happy birthday tenko, from (all the names from those members from EE who want to congratulate him)
ofcourse this is just a short message, it also can be much longer XD

it goes:

Name
Email
Website......... and the larger box is for your message (400 character limit)

the next screen is two buttons which are basically "confirm" and "return".

Looks like he's roughly saying that he is surprised he got comments from people all over the world because of his illustrations. He seems pretty happy about it to me ^^

Here is a translation of his blog entry:

"After receiving an unusually high number of messages, most from overseas, I feel in obligation to give a reply. Thus I drew this picture. The layout looks like something that already has been seen. Perhaps I had drawn something like this before...? Was it a jacket picture of a video...? Dunno where have I saved it."

The translation isn't completely accurate, because I don't know how to express some phrases in English  :P, but I hope everybody can understand what he meant.

Wonderful picture today. Tenko is remembering correctly, one of the video jacket illustrations had a similar layout with the 3 Nyanki standing together in the foreground and the Nyagoking in the background.

Truly is such a great pic, and to think after his Birthday hes the one giving us a great present =P

The Pizza Cats end up not needing to do much of anything because Big Cheese's plan backfires on him when the Ninja Crows realize the machines are full of shinies and spend all their time trying to win prizes instead of fighting the cats. They do, however, have to prevent Bad Bird Good Bird their fellow crow friend from giving in to the mass merchandise madness. When the robot explodes, the crow-d scrambles to claim the goods.

On a related note, one of the things I've found interesting in my Japanese studies is that there's two separate words for "cold": "samui" for weather or atmosphere and "tsumetai" for something that's cold to the touch, like ice.

Well, if this book was a compilation of "Samurai Pizza Cats" article and other related articles taken from Wikipedia, it is a waste of money. Nevertheless it is still interesting to know how SPC has drawn enough attention to be picked and published for such kind of company.

Mechadon. Why is Tenko drawing his "creatures" 20 years after KNT's broadcast? Maybe he wants to continue, he could want to give the Nyankii more adventures. Don't you think?

He's probably drawing them because it's something he enjoys, and he knows that we fans enjoy it as well. But that's a far cry from trying to animate a whole series, which can't be done by one person alone. And frankly, as much as I love KNT and SPC, I wouldn't want to see a new series. I don't think it can be done. For starters, they probably wouldn't be able to get all the VAs back together and I hate when characters get voice changes. The only "new" material I'd want in the form of animation would be a real movie, based on Tatsuya Souma's manga. Mmm.. out of those two, I think I like the Guido and Speedy one the best. Polly looks a bit different from normal in the second picture... Maybe it's just me, though.

It's like a Swiss Army Umbrella. It hypnotizes enemies, fries up Ninja Crows, conceals a sword, is useful for whacking people, provides ample shade, makes you look cool while posing, and yes, even protects you from the rain! It's the most versatile umbrella weapon since The Penguin's collection.

One other one from earlier this month. (http://geocities.yahoo.co.jp/gl/suzukitenko/view/20110511) When Tenko was out walking, he saw two crows sitting on top of an electrical switchboard box. It inspired him to draw this.

Cute. You just reminded me of a few times I saw some crows earlier this month. Once was when I saw a crow sitting on top of the traffic lights and joked about crows now being "traffic cops". I can't remember where I saw the other one, but it might have been on a speed limit sign or other traffic sign. Seems like the crows around here are out to bust all the bad drivers we have! ;)

Oh, and I forgot to add that it makes a good shield and is surprisingly strong. And didn't Guido once use it to shoot rings out to bind Ninja Crows with too? You can't get that from an ordinary umbrella, so I still stand by my statement. Now if only he tried using it as a dragchute sometime, that might save him from crashing into buildings so often when he gets launched by Francine.

One of the stranger bits of trivia that has come out with the recent DVD release and event is that there was apparently an idea for a spinoff/spiritual sequel to KNT. It would have been called "Kyattou Keisatsu Beranmee" ("Cat Poilce Beranmee"). The bad guys would have been police dogs, and the good guys would have been Okappiki (Edo-era police) cats. It seems that they didn't get very far before the idea was scrapped, though.

Damn that spinoff sounds pretty cool.

That's super adorable and neat, I think he might be poking fun at the fact they were called samurai cats when they really were ninjas. I got some of gist like that.

Yeah, he was wondering why the dub decided to call them samurai instead of ninjas. I offered some of my thoughts on the matter in a comment (that "ninja cats" would have been too similar to "ninja turtles", and that without the whole SD mecha context, since that fad was limited to Japan at the time, the helmets and armor would give more of a "samurai" vibe than a "ninja" one to western audiences.)
