Title: Learn Japanese with the Pizza Cats
Post by: Violet on November 17, 2009, 02:09:31 pm
I made these back when I first started learning Japanese.  Some say the best way to learn something is to teach it.  Teyandee found it recently and pointed out a few bad links (I had to move it when I lost AOL web hosting and some things got messed up) and I went through and fixed it.  This could be a helpful and fun way for SPC fans to learn some basic Japanese.

Please send me a PM if you find any broken links and I'll fix them.

Oh my, Violet. That's an awesome tool you've made there. I'm seeing a new kind of trend in the community these days, just in time for the 20th Anniversary. People are going back and finding everything that's already been done years before. And for good purpose, cause I had no clue that half of this stuff existed. Keep 'em coming.

Ah, but if you did a "Learn French with the Pizza Cats" you'd be able to watch SPC on DVD.

True enough. Maybe someone who speaks French should start up that topic.

I remember these. They were fun and very informative, too.

I agree with felineki, Violet's lessons is a good starting point to learn Japanese. The worst part to learn this language is the fact that Japanese doesn't resemble anything of Western languages. Thus, for me, it is like having a two completely separate places inside my brain, one for Japanese and other for Portuguese (for whom not aware already, I have been educated in both languages).

I learned some English late at school. To express myself in that language, I think first in Portuguese and then translate to English. Of course the result isn't always good, but I think people can understand what am I trying to say.  :P

Just goes to show, School CAN be educational

I found only i broken link: On Lesson 2 page (http://www.edoropolis.org/violet/lessons/02/index.html) there is a reference "Lesson 1, Introduction to Japanese writing and vocal sounds." which contains http://www.edoropolis.org/violet/lessons/01/lesson01.html
It should be: http://www.edoropolis.org/violet/lessons/01/

I have learning-releated question:
In each episode after the opening credits we see this picture:

(http://pic.ipicture.ru/uploads/091130/thumbs/6ax1S6RjUU.jpg) (http://ipicture.ru/Gallery/Viewfull/27894721.html)

Lesson 1 gives me the idea that this is mostly Katakana with possible some Kanji characters.
Can anyone tell what is written on the picture?

It's part of the credits:

TV Tokyo
Sotsu Agency
Tatsunoko Productions

You did send me that and I fixed it, but Teyandee found a bunch of other bad links in November and that's when I decided I needed to go through it and fix the whole thing.

Here is my contribution to Japanese learning lessons:

http://teyandee.edoropolis.org/kyattou_ninden_teyandee_episodes.html

Description:
Article contains episodes titles written in hiragana, kanji, katakana and romanji.
I compared titles from :gurulou: and :violet: sites. For some episodes they give various titles. I found the differences and tried to show that despite this fact, both titles writings mean the same. Need help on this - some differences I can`t explain.

Romanji titles are give with the :speedy: voice.

Also, I analysed all titles to find out, which Japanese writing system each character belongs to.

I hope this article will be helpful.  ;]

What is the meaning of the word   オイラ?
It can be found in the 天下無敵のヤッ太郎 track lyrics (http://kyattounindenteyandee.wikia.com/wiki/天下無敵のヤッ太郎)

Is this word means "we/I" as おいら? (oira)

Probably meant to be a "tough" version of おいら.  Before katakana was adopted for writing foreign words, it was considered the more "manly" way to wriite (as opposed to the more flowing and curvy hiragana) and also used the way we use italics, to make a word stand out.

Do I understand correctly that the words with the L letter are not usually used by the Japanese in their everyday speech? (with the exception - English words; like Hold on or Black fight - from the KNT tracks).

For example, they say METARU for metal or MIRAKURU for miracle.

The questions arises while I was trying to do the romanization for the Mikazuki Konekushon (http://kyattounindenteyandee.wikia.com/wiki/三日月コネクッション) song.

The 3rd line is モンロー・ウォークして. First word can be romanized as "Monroo". I think this is the reference to Marilyn Monroe (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Marilyn_Monroe).

The question is - why do they sing "Mo-n-lo-o" in the track (as I hear) and not "Mo-n-ro-o"?

There is no "L" in Japanese. They have "ra", "ri", "ru", "re" and "ro" But the Japanese "R" sounds are kinda halfway between an L and a R, so it may sound like either to you.  Since it doesn't sound like the R in "Monroe" you are familiar with, it sounds more like an L to you.  (Keep in mind that Japanese who have studied foreign language may be able to pronounce both L and R just fine, just as an English speaker can learn to pronounce Japanese.)
Hiragana: ら り る れ ろ
Katakana:  ラ リ ル レ ロ

When writing a foreign word with an "L" in it, they'll use the closest one they can get.

I decided to move this thread here, since it's still somewhat Pizza Cat related and not completely off-topic.

Teyandee, I think when I was attempting to translate this song myself the line I came up with for that was "Walk like Monroe", as in Marilyn Monroe, as you stated.

This is interesting. Do I get it right that モンロー can be pronounced as Monroo or Monloo but the most accurate way of romanization will be Monroo?

Teyandee, I think when I was attempting to translate this song myself the line I came up with for that was "Walk like Monroe", as in Marilyn Monroe, as you stated.
Then I will use your translation :)

Yes, although it's probably fine to just write "Monroe" since that's what they were trying to say in the first place.
