Some more details: This set will feature package art by character designer Noritaka Suzuki and a special 32-page booklet. All 54 episodes are included, over a total of 9 discs. Also, to commemorate the occasion, Yattarou's voice actor Kappei Yamaguchi will be showing up to discuss Teyandee on a Niconico Douga stream this coming Wednesday (May 30).

I haven't seen anything mentioning English subtitles so far, so you'll probably have to wait for the Discotek release for that. I am intrigued by that booklet, though. I wonder what will be in it.

Is the damn booklet what caught my eye, the bad thing is how much it costs (Almost twice my rent without ship costs) but I really would like to have at least ONE original product of the cats; the Diskotek release sounds cool but this is an original japanese product with bonus material!! Would be great to purchase the DVD Box and the Yattaro figure at same time so I'd just pay for one package...

Anyway, the cost of both things would be almost 1000000 colombian pesos and I don't have that quantity by now and that's a shame; I may try to charge it to my credit card but that wouldn't be responsible from me... I don't know what to do...

I know how you feel. Only the DVD box would costs R$ 600 (about $300). Plus monstruous importation taxes and everything... Not a chance... =(

The Nicovideo stream just ended. The first hour was a promotion for a joint venture between Nicovideo and Tatsunoko which includes free streams of 14 different Tatsunoko shows, and a cafe at the Niconico headquarters featuring Tatsunoko-themed food and displays of production materials from various Tatsunoko shows. Nothing KNT related there.

But the last half hour was all about KNT, and featured guests Kappei Yamaguchi (Yattarou's voice actor) and Satoru Akahori (head writer). In case the stream wasn't archived, I recorded the audio for posterity's sake.

Official site, (http://www.starchild.co.jp/special/teyande/) featuring the opening sequence. The picture quality on it isn't spectacular (still better than the VHS encodes we've been used to), but during the aforementioned Nicovideo stream they played a "work in progress" version of the opening which looked better.

It's been such a long wait, sometimes it's hard to believe it's really going to happen.  And as I see each little new bit of news (for the DVDs and the figures) it become more and more real to me.
It's not that I thought anyone was lying about it, just that I've been let down so many times in the past.  Now it's really happening.

How an I going to afford all this stuff???  I'll find a way.

Boxarts looking neat and sweet! =D

Did Tenko work on this boxart? Because the Speedy in the BG gives off vibes of his more contemporary style.

Yes, the box art was by Tenko. He says he's also done some art for the back of the box that hasn't been shown yet.

Megumi Hayashibara's radio show Tokyo Boogie Night advertised the upcoming DVD release back on it's June 10th broadcast, which can be heard here (http://www.nicozon.net/watch/sm18105765) (at about 23 minutes, 45 seconds in). Somewhat natural given that her show is sponsored by King Record/Star Child, the same company that's publishing the DVD box, but it's also worth mentioning that Megumi Hayashibara herself voiced a character in one episode of KNT: Chomoranma #1/2, the mountain climbing robot. The narrator who reads the sponsor credits at the beginning and ending of this broadcast might also sound familiar. ;-)

Title: Re: KNT DVD Boxset to be Released in Japan
Post by: KageReneko on July 30, 2012, 01:18:14 am
I always had curiosity about that character voiced by Hayashibara; is it supposed to be a kind of parody of Ranma 1/2 (whose seiyuu also is Hayashibara besides Kappei Yamaguchi)? I just can't see a real connection besides the name and seiyuu...

Title: Re: KNT DVD Boxset to be Released in Japan
Post by: felineki on July 30, 2012, 01:28:23 am
It's a weird pun. The robot's name comes from "Chomolungma", which is another name for Mt. Everest. When rendered in Japanese syllables, this becomes "Chomoranma". All the Karakara mechs have a model number at the end of their name, so it becomes "Chomoranma #1/2" as a reference to Ranma 1/2. And to further the reference the staff decided to go the whole 9 yards and actually get Hayashibara to do the voice.

Wow... This must be the most complicated pun/reference ever...

So the official KNT reunion event happened today. I haven't been able to find much info on what happened yet, but apparently Satoru Akahori (head writer), Kappei Yamaguchi (Yattarou VA), Orikasa Ai (Pururun VA) and Noritaka Suzuki (character design) were there.

Reports are that the picture quality is very good. Some small screenshots can be seen here (http://futalog.com/135555910.htm) (unfortunately the full size versions are gone). The included booklet apparently explains that the DVDs were made from Sotsu Agency's telecine masters, which puts an end to those decades of rumors about the masters having been lost/destroyed/etc.

EDIT: Here's (http://i109.photobucket.com/albums/n57/felineki/11359379.png) a couple larger screenshots that were posted on a message board thread. The quality seems about the best you could hope for with a 20 year old show.

Also apparently it was said at the recent event that the reason KNT went unreleased on DVD for so long was simply that the VHS tapes 20 years ago didn't sell well enough! After years of rumors about lost film, copyright issues, or even numbers of fingers, it's good to have an official explanation, even if it's a mundane one.

Here's a blog post (http://ameblo.jp/yuidammy/entry-11324277767.html#main) with some pictures taken at the event that took place on Monday. They served Pizza Cat pizza, Karakara chicken, and three types of cocktails named after the Nyankii's special attacks. They also gave away a picture of Yattarou drawn by his voice actor Kappei Yamaguchi, and signed by him, head writer Satoru Akahori, and Pururun's voice actress Ai Orikasa.

I managed to get a hold of some of the full-sized versions of the screenshots I mentioned earlier. They should give a good idea of the DVDs' picture quality:

Great info felineki!
On a full HD 1080p screen I suspect it will still look a bit outdated, but that's only to be expected.. The screenshots look as sharp as we'd ever get without re-animating every frame, and they're way sharper than most of my memories of the show ;)

OP (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=9vTtsLfyCkc)
ED (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=X-sOISVvOGU)

These were just posted to Youtube today, and I would assume they're taken from the DVD given the picture quality. Unfortunately the sound seems pretty muffled.

Here (http://s151.photobucket.com/albums/s124/zwnbs/EE/) are some more pictures of the box, together with the menu from Disc 9, and some pictures from inside the booklet.

Disc 9 has three extras: OP without text, ED 2nd version without text, and what looks like a TV trailer (VHS quality). The OP without text seems much clearer than the regular open used throughout the disc. A comparison is included in the above link.

The sound is better than in the Youtube videos. Here (http://www.zwnbsp.com/spc/OPClip.flac) is a 15 second clip of audio fresh from the DVD.
What else? Oh yeah, there's no subtitles here I'm afraid. But that's no matter for me.  ;) =] ;] rule in any language.

Thanks for the clip. To me it actually sounds about the same as the OP on Youtube, but that's just an initial impression. As for subtitles, Discotek's release is going to have them, so we'll just have to be patient.

The Japanese audio is Mono at source which is common in old anime (e.g. Dragonball). But once you start watching it you won't notice the audio being mono, plus the audio isn't muffled or distorted at any point. So you get this clear image (Image being waaay better than the French version which has ghosting images due to unproper frame-rate changes they did.) with clean audio.
I have the first volume so I can vouch for ANE.  ;)

Alrighty.

This has me thinking again, though it's something I've already been considering: Even though we're getting subbed KNT, there are still a lot of other things to be translated. Interviews, doujin, etc. Maybe one of these days I can take a shot at reviving Project Dream.

Title: Re: KNT DVD Boxset to be Released in Japan

Okay, here's (https://felineki.opendrive.com/files?NF8xMTg4MDA5MF92Z25aVQ) the audio recording of the KNT section of the Nicovideo stream from just a little under a year ago. It features Yattarou's voice actor Kappei Yamaguchi and head writer Satoru Akahori. Sorry it took me so long to get around to uploading it. Maybe we can get around to translating it someday. One interesting fact I was able to make out was the confirmation of the suspicion held by many fans that the "Pururun Nyan" name on Pururun's Edomae Set packaging was due to trademark issues; "Pururun" as is was already trademarked. On a tangent, this is how Ken of Street Fighter fame got his last name. When Hasbro was releasing its Street Fighter action figures, they ran into trademark issues with the name "Ken" due to Mattel's Ken dolls. So they game him the last name of "Masters". Capcom eventually officially adopted that name.
