Title: KNT Official Fan Book
Post by: felineki on September 24, 2012, 05:58:12 pm
Just happened to come across this. (http://www.e-hon.ne.jp/bec/SA/Detail?refBook=978-4-7580-1288-1&Sza_id=MM) Apparently an official book is set to be released next month. The description says it includes production materials, interviews, and even some drawings related to the proposed "Cat Keisatsu Beranmee" sequel.

Edit: Here's (http://photozou.jp/photo/photo_only/1956779/153829855) a picture of an ad for it. Looks like it will have cover art by Tenko.

Here's an English-language site currently taking preorders for the book. (http://www.1999.co.jp/eng/10200982) They're based in Japan but ship internationally.

Yeah, unfortunately the site I posted earlier has stopped accepting preorders. The book has jumped to #7 on their best-selling books/magazines list, so I'm guessing they got a lot of preorders. If anyone else wants it, Amazon Japan (http://www.amazon.co.jp/%E3%82%AD%E3%83%A3%E3%83%83%E5%85%9A%E5%BF%8D%E4%BC%9D%E3%81%A6%E3%82%84%E3%82%93%E3%81%A7%E3%81%87-%E5%85%AC%E5%BC%8F%E3%83%95%E3%82%A1%E3%83%B3%E3%83%96%E3%83%83%E3%82%AF-%E4%BB%AE-%E3%83%9D%E3%82%B9%E3%83%88%E3%83%A1%E3%83%87%E3%82%A3%E3%82%A2%E7%B7%A8%E9%9B%86%E9%83%A8/dp/4758012881) is still taking preorders, and it would seem that they ship internationally.

Came out to 5,857 yen (about $75 at current exchange rates) with shipping to the USA on Amazon.jp

I can't really afford it... but I ordered anyway.

Anyway, once I get my copy, I'm going to write a review.

Last week, Kappei Yamaguchi, Yattarou's voice actor, mentioned the book on his Twitter account. (https://twitter.com/ENma_Dororon/statuses/269981080826818561) He posted a picture of the finished book, and stated that "this is where my roots lie".

Hobby Search has updated their page for the book with an example image. (http://www.1999.co.jp/eng/10200982) It looks like it contains nice, large prints of the art used for the old KNT VHS boxes.

Just got my payment request from HobbySearch. Here's hoping it arrives next week, I'm so excited!

I'll post a review of the book if nobody beats me to the punch. Just seeing the two preview pictures via Felineki's post is making me really anxious to get the book in my hands!

I got my book!!

It's 144 pages, soft cover.  Tenko cover which in small print gives the romaji title as "CatNinDen Teyandee", so I guess that's official.  The first part is official color pictures, like the cover art for the VHS tapes, CDs and even a telephone card.  All just the art without the text and titles.  Next is the character guide which has all the important characters and even a few that were only in 1 or 2 episodes, like the NYC Pizza Cats.  Then some pictures from the credits followed by an episode guide.  Next are all the model sheets, including a few I haven't seen before like Yattarou in the Santa costume, and even one page of "Cat Police Beranmee" drawings from the sequel that was being planned (but sadly never happened).  And finally a bunch of interviews with the cast and crew, this is all Japanese text and may be interesting but won't do you much good if you don't read Japanese.

Cool!! I always wrote CatNinDen Teyandee when everybody else used Cat/Kyatto Ninden Teyandee so I am officially better than you all...  ;)

Just kidding, would be cool to see the book...

Sounds great. Looking forward to receiving my copy. According to a poster on 2ch, it includes model sheets for Karamaru with the Komusoutector, which is something I always wanted to see.

Nifty sounding fan book!
The sketches from the planned sequel especially sound interesting.
Are the cast  & crew interviews recent?

Yeah, I'd like to have seen more of the Cat Police Beranmee art, but for all I know there might not have been much more done than what was on that one page.

The interviews are recent, probably done especially for this book.  Noticed one mistake there, they gave Omitsu's voice actress' name as Yamaguchi Kappei (Yattarou's voice) in romaji under her picture, it should be Mizutani Yuko.  They did have the kanji names right though.

My copy arrived today. Was glad to see some production drawings I hadn't seen before, such as facial expression sheets  for Usahime, Otama and Omitsu.

I noticed one other error aside from the one Violet mentioned: Ball (the NY equivalent of Otama) has her name written as "Boonomu" (ボーノム) rather than "Booru" (ボール) like it should be. Given that the characters look vaguely similar, this was probably a case of someone getting confused by sloppy handwriting, like many of the infamous Gamest errors.

I don't think anyone has attempted to translate it yet, but I'll see about going through and at least translating some of the more interesting points sometime soon.

I decided I wasn't going to hold out any longer after not having found this at any of dealers that specialized in artbooks at Anime Central.  Had to put out the call to eBay for this one (it must have been a limited print run), but I'm looking forwards to receiving my copy....should be in a few weeks (Japan Post / customs / USPS transitions are slow).  I'm choosy when it comes to artbooks, being they're not a cheap thing to get....obviously they have to be series I enjoy, and not just filled with images of borderline ecchi / hentai, which those kind, along with anthology books, seem to get high print runs and are everywhere.  Series-specific books are ridiculously rare beasts to acquire or so it seems.

I'll pose my own thoughts once I have it.

I now hold my copy in my hands....just came in this morning.  Very nice, despite my inability to read the character bios and interviews.  Sure I could scan the pages as editable text files, copy and paste them to an online translator, but those translators are highly inaccurate, and I wish not to wreck the binding.

Despite that, I always find these guidebooks interesting, giving one a look into the series' production...from concept sketches, storyboard and background art, to the finished product that we see on TV.  In short, this book's a keeper for that alone.

The line art section.  Those at times (as I have in other artbooks I own) can be a treasure trove of unused outfits, body design (pre-production sketches and such), and facial expressions.  Kind of like what we see with Tenko's blog entries.  Those are more in the raw / manga style, whereas and like with most other anime, the final character design is often a cleaned up and stylized look, to give it a 'shiny and fluid' look when put to animation...more appealing to the eyes so to speak.

Title: Re: KNT Official Fan Book
Post by: felineki on June 09, 2013, 07:41:48 pm
Yeah, the model sheet section is great, even though a lot of it is stuff we already had scans of. One interesting thing is that some of the model sheets in the book are pre-finalized versions that have some details that were omitted at the last second from the finalized model sheets (and thus the show's animation). For example, Polly has two hearts on each forearm, and Guido has two diamonds on each forearm, as opposed to one. And all 3 cats have distinct thruster nozzles on their backpacks. Francine has little antennae in her ears, and buttons on her apron.

It's nothing short of a miracle that we got a fan book at all 20 years after the show's airing, but if there's something more I would have liked to see it would have been for the model sheet section to be much more expansive. I would have liked to see enemy robots, architectural plans (would love to see the plans for the pizzeria), extras, stuff that didn't end up making it into the show (Princess Rabby, etc.), early pre-production design concepts and such.

I hear you on that, Felineki.  Even so, I'm glad we even got anything after 20+ years.  While yes, most of the line art is out there in digital form, you pointed out some of the details that didn't make the final designs that we're familiar with, either in the anime or in digitized form.

I've been meaning to thank you, PizzaCatFan. I had been putting off buying the KNT artbook until after I got the SPC DVDs, but your post (http://www.edoropolis.org/forums/index.php?topic=6999.msg50021#msg50021) prompted me to hurry and order a copy right after I read it. I didn't want to be stuck without one, or have to resort to paying a much higher price later on. And, funny coincidence, both the artbook and the KNT replacement disc arrived on the same day, which was nice timing.

Not much else to say about it right now because I still haven't gone through the whole thing yet, but from what I've seen so far, I already love it.

You're welcome, Tigriss.  Good to hear you also got your replacement KNT disc.  I just got my SPC set almost 2 weeks ago, but in the meanwhile (while waiting for it), I soaked up the entire KNT set like a sponge, especially after getting my replacement for the 2nd DVD.  The show, while still being funny and full of action, it does have a different vibe to it.  I can't put my finger on it....it may be due to its more easier pace and the fact that not all scenes have some BGM playing behind it (like in SPC), which gives it an entirely different mood.

I digress.  Enjoy that art/fan book.

Yeah I totally agree, I also hope I can get a copy of it or else find scans somewhere, its not going to be sold here as far as I know and probably only option is importing, maybe if certain bookstore imports it that would be great but we never know what will be imported and to be honest I never buy online. Well in any case let me know when you get it about facts like if its translated or not and the overal quality etc =).

By the way, I dont totally understand why they call it "official fanbook" I mean somehow if its made by fans it sounds like the opposite to being official but this book looks like official stuff, or am I missing something? and wasnt there a previour official artbook with production designs and sketches of characters? I have seen some of these sheets here somewhere so Im sure it was published at some point

My guess was it's the official book for fans, hence "official fanbook". But yes, putting the words in that order makes it sound they way you described it. Either way it is "official" in the sense that Sotsu and Tatsunoko signed it off.

As for any other artbook, IIRC there was some character artwork/sketches floating around before both this fanbook and the King Record/Star Child DVD booklet. However I always guessed they came from production sheets which pop up every now and then on eBay. That or they were from the dōjinshi.

Ah yes it might be what you said, sure is "official" since Sotsu and Tatsunoko signed it off. So with that title probably they only tried to emphasize its a book for the fans and not really for the people who never watched the SPC (I know I know, who would buy the book not being a fan...).

And about the previous sheets that used to float around with sketches or some production designs, I think then probably is as you said, not really from a book, my guess would be that these were taken from production material rather than dojin work, or at least the drawings look quite a lot like in the anime and fit in the usual pre-production designs made for other series, illustrating angles and expressions needed by the animators.

I really want to get my hands on those fan books. This one, in particular, sounds very promising.

I have to agree with you, more considering apparently there were no other artbooks prior to this one so we only had few freed materials from production time but not really anything like an artbook featuring clean art and sketches with interviews and more, I really want that too, I hope I can get it here in shop or somewhere. By the way the DVD booklet mentioned, I dont know if you saw that thread (I stumbled upon it a few days ago), I cant find the thread right now, but as I downloaded it then it is faster to upload it again, I added the translation they made for the interview, all the credit goes for the nice folks who scanned this and translated for later sharing it here, sorry I cant name them now.

Im also collecting the design sheets availables on this site and overal internet, when I have it I will let you know, its interesting to see some of these, I wish quality was better in some but its still cool I think.

I think that book sounds cool, but I think it sounds even cooler because there's interviews included.

Thanks for the link.

You are welcome =), I find the DVD booklet specially cool because of the interviews added there, so I agree, the book will be great because of the different interviews that it features which will help us understand a lot more of the SPC and circunstances of its production.

Yeah, I'm really interesting in reading those interviews. I love interviews or commentaries that give some insight as to the behind-the-scenes stuff.

Does anyone know when this comes out, or if it has already? Because once it does, it's getting my money. I haven't even finished looking through the original yet, but a translated copy might motivate me to finish, since I'll finally be able to actually read it without struggling on one page forever.

Side note, not to be bossy, but could some of you maybe trim the multi-quotes in your posts? It's a bit cumbersome when you have like five quotes in your post per one new original sentence.
