Marvelous news, Burke! Welcome back

The one advantage of keeping the same username for 17 years... I can at least pretend I'm memorable.

Up until very recently, I was the News Director and Morning News Anchor for a group of radio stations in BC.

Now I am a political communications specialist (ie: spin doctor) working in the Canadian Government.

As much as I'd like to see it back on the air, the references are too dated for it to survive outside of a nostalgia-block... and I think Bandai still has merch rights, which means The Hub is not going to be interested. Best bet might be Boomerang/Teletoon Retro

Mine FINALLY came in today! The problem with living in rural Canada is that the postal system is less than stellar.

According to Discotek, they're shipping today!

Ok, so there is one advantage to having no life to speak of: spare cash

Speedy Wink I hear that! Put in my order this morning while at work
7  Samurai Pizza Cats / General SPC Discussion / Re: What affiliate/station did you watch SPC on, and when did it air? on: June 04, 2013, 10:02:51 pm

Nothing could beat TMNT until it went off the air.

It was also an unfortunate time for rival superhero team cartoons. Remember "Stunt Dawgs" and "Biker Mice from Mars"?

I do think the contemporary 'anime' craze that was getting underway at that point also gave it a better shot..even if just for that one year.  At least here in the U.S., it would take two more years, DBZ making the move to Cartoon Network, and this little thing called Pokemon to catch worldwide hype for anime to really boom.  I'd say SPC, Sailor Moon, and the time Dragon Ball / DBZ was in syndication, planted those seeds.

Sailor Moon's commercial success really kicked off the import boom of the 90s. It most likely pushed Saban to resurrect the show, even just to break up what would have been 90 minutes of teens fighting robots. Too bad SPC was never big enough here to spawn much in the way of toys and merch for the North American market

That said, it's interesting the choices some TV execs and programming directors make...what to air and what time.

I'll say. I had to get it via antenna from WNYO in Buffalo at 6 AM, but my friend (who had cable) got it at 3 PM from Fox Rochester. Even after it went off-air in the US, it ran at 2 AM on YTV in Canada for another lap of episodes before it got canned there too. If they ran at 5:30 AM instead of Tom and Jerry, I'd be much happier... sun wasn't up, so the signal was much clearer.

.....and it was Haim Saban himself who helmed Fox Kids starting in 1997 as well.  Except for DBZ, starting in the 1997-98 season here in the U.S., most Saban Entertainment programs were exclusively on the Fox Kids block.  This included their last real big 'hit', Digimon.

Hopefully it's not too off-topic, since we're talking of where and when we first saw the show, I've wondered for some years now, why it wasn't until the 1996-97 season when the U.S. finally got SPC?  While I'm glad it 'did not' come here until then (otherwise I wouldn't have paid attention or known...wasn't watching much for 'cartoons' in the early 90s; it took SPC and anime in general to rekindle my interest in animation), it's just always been a nagging curiosity.

As far as I understood it, it did run briefly in the US in 91, but did not gain much traction going head-to-head against the Ninja Turtles cartoon. They brought it back in the mid-90s because it fit in well with their live-action block of Power Rangers, Samurai Syber Squad, and Masked Rider.

I saw that too. Whew... I'm glad I'm not the only one that didn't recognize he did the narrator's voice.  Yikes!

I doubt it was him in Double Trouble for Princess Vi
12  Samurai Pizza Cats / Teyandee! Discussion / Re: KNT Discotek media Preorders... Arriving!! on: May 01, 2013, 10:55:35 pm
......and I sit and wait for mine to come yet. (pre-ordered on the 24th of April).

I can sympathize with the frustration. I preordered Feb 26 off Rightstuf, and got a note today that it'll be shipped in the next 48 hours

14  Samurai Pizza Cats / General SPC Discussion / Re: OFFICIAL SPC and KNT Boxsets to be released by Discotek Media! on: March 28, 2013, 05:57:20 pm
At least this will make one of the puns involving his name easier. There's a part in one episode where Karamaru orders a meal without corn (because in Japanese it's the same as "Koon"), then gets mad when it arrives with corn.

Now now... how do you know you don't like it unless you try it?  Grin
15  Samurai Pizza Cats / General SPC Discussion / Re: Lost and Found on: March 27, 2013, 09:31:48 am
I used to have stacks of floppy disks full of pics. Back in the days of dial up, saving pics was the best option. I had some rubbish drawings too, but I never backed those up and they were purged with the rest of Geocities.
16  Samurai Pizza Cats / General SPC Discussion / Re: Times sure have changed on: March 26, 2013, 12:32:50 am
We never die, we just hibernate. This fandom is forever.

It's what makes the show one of the best. I know that when I get my hands on it, I will be doing a livestream of some episodes. I will post a link when closer to the release date.
17  Samurai Pizza Cats / General SPC Discussion / Re: How much merchandise will you be purchasing? on: March 26, 2013, 12:25:24 am
Discotek says they will have it up for preorder on their website "soon", while Rightstuf has had it listed at $42 since February.
18  Samurai Pizza Cats / General SPC Discussion / Re: How many of you are buying the DVDs? on: March 26, 2013, 12:18:20 am
Already preordered KNT, eagerly awaiting SPC. Can't wait to retire my shoddy VHS collection.
19  Samurai Pizza Cats / Teyandee! Discussion / Re: New KNT Toy To Be Made?! on: March 19, 2013, 09:13:21 am
About time too. This thing was supposed to be out in time for Christmas 2012, then sometime in December 2012, then February 2013, and finally March 2013. Looks like they just went up on ebay this morning
20  Samurai Pizza Cats / General SPC Discussion / Re: What affiliate/station did you watch SPC on, and when did it air? on: February 15, 2013, 09:26:08 am

My VHS full of SPC episodes has varying degrees of degradation....some are quite clear with just a hint of snow, others are like trying to watch the show through the fog.

It was especially irritating when the last two minutes of Tom and Jerry was clear, and the start of the show was good...but then the snow kept getting worse and worse. I remember after I finally got a TV and VCR in my room, I could just tape SPC and did not have to get up at 6:30 AM - only to find the last 10 minutes is all snow
