Today, I watched Santa Sangre (Blood of the Saint). A surrealist horror movie by Alejandro Jodorowsky.

There isn't too much of a story to report, except that a young boy has a mother who is rather fundamentalist about her temple, Holy Blood, being destroyed. When it is, she joins with him to the circus, but becomes enraged with a big male brute and tattoo lady. Then a series of events cuts, no pun intended, the story ahead several years after the young man escapes from a mental home and rejoins with his 'armless' mother. Santa Sangre, basically, incorporates elements of the very darkly hilarious moments along with the overwhelming, visceral violent scenes that gave Jordorowsky's El Topo its following. Maybe it's not horror in the traditional sense, it does contain bizarre images such as an elephant funeral, chickens falling from the sky, and mentally handicapped kids tricked into snorting cocaine.

Anyways, it's late, so I'm not going to ramble on.

The last game I was playing was good ol' Final Doom. You know the score. Run, shoot evil monsters, open door, find key, find exit. Lather, rinse and repeat. All alone in a world of hurt, dressed in green. Although I've been too busy to play games recently.

Guido: "Well, now I've seen everything, as if the wanton destruction of the Brazilian rainforests weren't enough for you, you're the most environmentally irresponsible person I've ever met!"

That one certainly surprised me when I first saw SPC.

Err...yeah, this is just like that "Now Watching" thread I made.

Recently, I read Naked Lunch by William Seward Burroughs, the novel on which his reputation as a writer solely rests upon. Written in a hotel room in Tangier, Morrocco between 1954 and 1957 and published in the U.S. in 1962, it caused great controversey with its explicit depictions of drug use and sexual abuse. Much of this novel largely eschews any traditional form of storytelling and embraces a far more experimental style. The much-touted "cut-up" technique--mirrored the workings of a junkie's brain as he narrated the addict's monumental descent into hell, as he travels from New York to Tangiers, and then into the Interzone. There he finds a nightmarish modern urban wasteland in which the forces of evil vie for control of the individual and all of humanity. Burroughs sees addiction as part of the global conspiracy by the presiding powers of our world. How does Burroughs explode this conspiracy? By inviting us to lunch.

While many would like to put William S. Burroughs down as nothing more than a junkie who killed his own wife and whose writing is very overrated, there is simply such power in his words that cannot be denied. The captivating writing style and the amazingly hilarious black humor that abounds throught the book come straight off every page. Those easily outraged by the more lurid content of the book are missing the point as Burroughs pulls no punches describing a junkie's world and what goes on within his mind whether it's real, imagined or while in a narcotic stupor. The concept of dehumanization cannot be ignored by anyone who lives, and in pieced-part what the book may be about. The book takes egocentric forms of fantasy, adventursome, vision, experience, rebellion, terror & sabotage on a universal scale beyond peaks of mere interest and just might make you look at everything including prehistoric events differently. Recommended for fans of Bret Easton Ellis and Chuck Palahniuk.

Somewhat similar to the "What are you listening to?" thread, in that you post what was the last movie you saw, although include a small review.

Yesterday, I watched Peter Jackson's Bad Taste for the third time. When it comes to splatter-flicks it's hard to find a bigger milestone than Bad Taste. I laugh my ass off when I think of the ignorant and unaware Tolkien-fans who are about to watch it in order to check out what Peter Jackson has done before The Lord of the Rings. If they haven't seen it, they're in for a bit of a surprise even though mere name says it all. The basic plot concerns four bumbling government agents whose job it is to rid scenic New Zealand of any alien scum that may be invading their otherwise peaceful country. After being called upon to explore an entire town that has been mysteriously deserted, the men fall upon a shocking discovery...

Bad Taste took four years, a shoestring budget, and a tiny devoted cast and crew to complete. Shooting took place mainly on weekends, while the amateurs tended to their daily lives the rest of the week. The unmitigated commitment the crew had towards the production of the film really shows, as they all must have given their utmost towards not just getting the movie complete, but making it look spectacular. Jackson's camerawork and special effects are nothing short of mind-blowing, and the fast-paced editing really gives this 16mm wonder a big-budget, professional look while still maintaining a goofy, campy feel.

Yes indeed, this movie has it all: Guns, cars, aliens, blood, intestines, blood, vomit, blood, spaceships, bazookas, blood, rubber costumes, and even exploding sheep (my personal favorite). However, it's not for those with a weak stomach (well, it is in the title, you know) or those who don't understand the intense awesomeness (yes, I realise that isn't a real word) of low-budget B-movies. But, if one wishes to explore the world of B-grade splatter flicks, I simply cannot think of a better place to start.

I'm not going to put these titles in any order because I can never decide where to put which title.

Rez (PS2) I've never come across a game quite like this. The visuals and sound immerse me like no game has ever done for me.
Freespace 2 (PC) This game ruled my world for 2 years straight with its gorgeous graphics and intense dog-fighting technique.
Klonoa: Door to Phantomile (PS1) I love old-school platformers, this one sums up everything I like about them.
Doom/Doom II/Final Doom (PC) Let's not forget the first person shooter genre while we're at it. Wink
Aliens Versus Predator 1+2 (PC) Being a big fan of the movies, these games struck a chord with me instantly and represented a truly horrifying gaming experience.

Okay, my comments were very brief, but I'm quite tired now.

Greetings, one and all, I'm Black Dragon. Unlike most of you, I never viewed SPC when it was airing around ten years ago. Actually, I had never even heard of it back then, so unfortunately, I don't get all fuzzy and nostalgic when viewing it (lucky sods, you Tongue). Over a year ago, when visiting some forums, I stumbled upon a thread describing the posters' favourite animes. Obviously, you can see where this is going as one poster mentioned SPC, and sometime during this summer, it suddenly popped into my mind for reasons unknown. After checking a few clips and the first episode on YouTube, it was enough to entrance me completely. Thanks to the intarnets, I viewed each episode and could only wonder what impression it could have left upon me about ten years ago. Anyways, enough with my rapidly spiralling out of control rambling, I hope to enjoy my time here. Also, I hope none of you TyPE LiEK ThIS!\!1 Wink
