Samurai Pizza Cats / General SPC Discussion / Re: OFFICIAL SPC and KNT Boxsets to be released by Discotek Media!

I got 'em! I got my SPC box set. With other favorites like the Dragon Ball Z original dub and My Little Pony Season 2 out before this, I had to pace myself. But the long wait paid off and I ordered it for a total of $24.81. The packaging is definitely on the cheap side--clear plastic, no outer sleeve, and the discs all look alike. No extras either. But for all 52 episodes of the first cartoon that ever really inspired me as a kid, who cares? They're finally here! Now I'm on Episode 5. Looks like you may have bought a bootleg. From Discotek's FB page: "Be on the lookout for fake Samurai Pizza Cats sets being sold as original Discotek/Eastern Star releases. Someone has started making factory copies of region 1 anime titles using the same cover art as the original and they are using the same UPC to list them. The copied set is in a clear case with no security sticker on the top. Our original sets are in a black 8 disc case with a security sticker on top." Yep, if that description is right I guess my copy is a bootleg. Damn, it was listed under the same ISBN on Amazon. But what the heck. It's as good as I'll get right now. No problem with the quality of the discs as of yet.

Gosh, that's a tough call for me. Even if they got some of the original crew back, could any of the original cartoon's "spirit" be replicated? It's not like My Little Pony, which was originally a scheme to market creepy toys to little girls and later revamped as a quality show. SPC was a quality show to begin with, and it was just a bunch of people without Japanese transcripts basically writing their own cartoon in 1991. They'll never really be able to recreate that. That said, it would be interesting to see a new version with an updated art style. Whether I would like it, I don't know.

Samurai Pizza Cats / General SPC Discussion / Re: How many of you are buying the DVDs?

I WANT to buy the SPC set, but man, at $50+ on Amazon it's just too expensive. But it's a box set. The SPC set has 8 DVDs, so that's really only $6.25 per DVD at $50. Anyway, as an SPC fan you have to find a way. Maybe you can't afford it now, but you NEED this! I'd already bought Dragon Ball Z: Rock the Dragon Edition for $59.99, that was enough splurging for me at the time... But great news! I waited, the set dropped $30 in price and I was all over it. The DVDs arrived yesterday and I'm watching 'em now! Now I'm reliving my childhood for $2.50 a DVD plus shipping. "So it's a giant...golden...chicken! Or something."

Thank you so much, that's a huge help! I think I have her mostly done now. All I had to do was put what was clearly not a dress on a standard dress form in the worst possible image editor imaginable.
You do what you gotta do. I'm sure Vi would agree with that philosophy.

I've been renting a room from a woman since October. Both are nice, and it's next to a lake. In other news, I gave a speech to the faculty at a transitional special ed school and obtained the SPC DVD set, which I am watching now! My quest to recover all my childhood favorites on physical media (including Garfield & Friends, Sonic SatAM, DBZ original dub) is coming full circle. BTW sans soul, I love those pictures. Best Daria cosplayers I've seen so far! I think they're from Russia.

I feel a story coming on about all this, a Vi story.
I like this. Welcome back. Also Dariacon? xD I didn't know there were that many fans. That was indeed a great show... hehe. Well, that one won't be a true convention so much as a gathering of friends. The eastern one will be bigger. It'll never be something like a BronyCon, but ultimately that fandom is defined by its longevity more than its numbers.

Samurai Pizza Cats / Fan Works / Re: What do you hate more in a SPC fanfic?

I hate it when fanfic writers go all grimdark on children's shows.
I agree, grimdark is annoying. Some writers get so caught up in irony (i.e. "look how different it is from canon!") and violence, they forget about writing stuff that the rest of us would want to read.

I am older now, that's for sure. Older and busier. It's been six years since I joined here, 20 years since the show was on TV. With other, more active fandoms I've discovered since then, I almost forgot about this place for a long time. I didn't even know the show had been released on DVD until I logged in tonight and saw you all talking about it. They look great, but they're too expensive! I hope they'll drop in price if I wait.

Yes, "the other Vi fan" is still alive! I haven't visited since September 2011 and a LOT has changed for me since then. Two years ago I got tired of living with my mom and moved south to another city, where I stayed with my grandparents until I found an apartment. But things didn't go as I planned. I was lonely and miserable a lot of the time, working lousy retail jobs. My salvation, apart from my dog being with me, came from discovering My Little Pony. I never watched the old versions but FIM is just magical. I was totally wrapped up in it for the better part of seven months. Finally, last Christmas I got fed up and quit my job. I moved out less than two months later and went back up north to stay with my brother. Around the same time I got involved in the Daria fandom as well. I discovered the show in the summer of '11 but was never an active member. Now I'm all over their message board and writing quite a bit of fanfiction. They still have a very robust online community, and I'm heading down to Iowa this weekend for the Midwest Dariacon. Should be a blast! I'm working a much better job now as a hotel clerk, and Daria and MLP are pretty much my main focus. It's been a long time since I watched Samurai Pizza Cats, though the memories and my favorite character were never far from my mind. I'm watching an episode right now and it's as funny as ever. So that's my story for the last two years. I feel bad about not getting back here sooner, especially with it being so slow now. So this thread is for everybody else who hasn't been on recently to tell us what's going on in your life, too.

Samurai Pizza Cats / General SPC Discussion / Re: Origins of the Rescue team
|
on: September 25, 2011, 12:11:34 am

I like to think that the Rescue Team members were the precursor to the Pizza Cats, but they all worked alone (remember they were all in different pizza joints, and only one usually shows up at a time?), which limited their effectiveness. Al Dente heard about this and decided to assemble a whole squad of crime-fighting pizza deliverycats in the center of Little Tokyo, to counter Big Cheese's evil schemes.
Although if that was the case, there were some flaws in his plan...have you noticed that aside from the Pizza Cats, there seems to be nobody keeping order in the streets of Little Tokyo? No cops, no royal guard; without the Cats, everyone's helpless.

Samurai Pizza Cats / General SPC Discussion / Re: Obsessions

I was obsessed back in '96. Now I'm just a nostalgic fan for the most part. But I love to sing the theme song, and I always try to get the guy's voice exactly right. It was done in a Paul Lynde-type voice, like Big Cheese; however, Michael Airington did it with more punch than Dean Hagopian. Also, I collect pictures of Princess Vi (many thanks for posting your collection, Violet) and giggle like a little kid when I see her on the show.

Samurai Pizza Cats / SPC Episode Reviews Board / SPC 09 - Double Trouble for Princess Vi
|
on: July 24, 2010, 01:52:56 am

I always liked this one. The Princess was nicer than usual, tagging along with Lucille to see the festival while Bad Bird tried to drug her (with magic powder that would make her think she was an unemployed dentist) so Cheese could have one of his shape-shifting cronies impersonate Vi and take over the kingdom. Of course, they failed miserably thanks to the cats and General Catton's fireworks display. My favorite moments: --When Vi is about to drink the drugged tea, but tastes it and groans "it's got sugar!" (Hence my name.) --Big Bert (the weird henchman impersonating Vi) forces Big Cheese to drink some disgusting sludge he scraped out of the pond. --Vi: "How can you go shopping without a credit card?!?!"--Narrator: "Big Bert finally changed out of that cute little kimono he was wearing..." Pictures are from Violet's incomparable site.
