AOL is discontinuing web hosting at the end of this month.  Back in 1997, AOL was number one, now they are just another free email service with a pretty good instant messenger.  Many parts of my web page were spread over different servers, but I always kept the main part on AOL because that was where it started and where all the links and search engines linked to.  I used to update the page every month.  This year I fell way behind on that because I was working on other things.  But, I do still love my web page, and I won't give it up so easily.  So, I'll be moving my home to edoropolis.org, I just hope nothing ever happens to it, otherwise I'd lose my page and EE *shudders*.  This will take some work, since I'll need to edit all of my page which have links to AOL, then reupload them.  My new home will be my index at Edoropolis http://www.edoropolis.org/violet/  You find some of the links don't work yet, but I'm still working on moving.

The old AOL page will be up until the end of the month, I'll probably get rid of some of the older content when I move, so go say goodbye if you've enjoyed it.  Most of my more popular stuff was already hosted elsewhere, although I'll still need to edit those pages a bit to fix the links to the index.

Bummer. Well, as long as you don't loose the site all together, I guess it's ok.

Kind of sucks, though, the fact that after 10 years, you are suddenly forced to move like that.

Good Luck to you.

End of an era I guess. I've known that site for quite some time. I've stumbled upon it many times long before I discovered these message boards.

Look on the bright side; it's only a web page. It would suck terribly if we lost the genius who created it. (knock on wood)

*wipes a tear* I remember back in the day when we'd spend all night long in AOL private SPC RPG chatrooms amidst a flurry of little IM windows running in the background, and a buddy list that would only hold 49 people.

But, some things in time turn out better than what you're used to. Don't think of it as an end, but more like a new beginning Smiley

It's not all bad, since I have to go through every page, I'm able to fix a lot of little things.

It's hard to believe it's been so long. Now as much as I dislike AOL, the two best things that ever came out of it were AIM and your site. Too bad I never got a chance to visit those old SPC chatrooms, they sounded like a lot of fun.

Here's to ten years and more at Edoropolis, Princess. *toasts to Vi* Cheers! =^_^=

One positive point is I may access Vi's page from my home. I don't know why, but AOL refuses to accept the connection from my ISP. Nevertheless, I can access her page from my job's network, so I guess it's not a problem arising from my physical localization.

3 CHEERS OF PRINCESS VI!

I did!  I renovated a lot of stuff last year for my 10 year anniversary, and some people even sent me nice presents! :3

The main problems losing my AOL hosting gives me are; #1 Everything is linked to the old page.  #2 Moving and updating takes my precious SPC project time away from other things like my newsletter, translations, and other stuff.  And #3, I didn't know what I was doing when I started 11 years ago (how to use directories, doing good page layouts, etc) but over the years I just built around my old mistakes to cover them up.  Now I gotta fix 'em.

Is managing a web site easy? (I know I have a forum site, but I used a free online forum creator(board zero) , mostly because I was afraid to use smf, and I'm HORRIBLE at scripting)

Most of it isn't stuff other people can help with.  After I move things, people can help out by checking for broken links or mistakes.

I could use help with my newsletter, that would give me more time for the web page.

To build my web pages, I had to learn HTML.  It's not as hard as learning something like C++ or even flash, but it does require more work than most people seem to be willing to do anymore.

HTML is easy, but is the kind of thing where a small mistake ruins everything, plus I bet back then was a real pain with the 36 k modens and that. Is the only programing thing I learned besides Basic, and unlike Basic, html is still being used. Nowadays there are a lot of editors you can use to speed up things, so is a bit easier, hessh programing html in notepad was like... well you know...is was like... well it wasn't.
 easy, ok?.

Way back in 1997, I could  still program "Hang man" on Basic, but you where on the Net, I salute you!

Vi, I remember using Windows 3.1.1 when we met. I used to dread getting punted by AOL cause the dial-up was soooo loud! It would always give away how long i've been online to my parents Speedy Wink

Do you keep copies of the html of each page in text documents or anything?  I hear the fear of "losing" everything, and it scares me.

Yes, I save everything on my hard drive before I upload it.  But I have lost hard drives before too.
