Classic games will always be my favorites, they were all unqiue unlike now where 75% of the games are COD clones, discuss classic gaming here.

Like this guy or girl said about quake:

Quote
Companies can make games with real-like graphics and action-packed gameplay, but nothing will ever beat this game.

Here's a few vids:

Quake is just a soft version of Doom which sucks less. And just to mention it....Quake 4 was the best quake till now.

Ego-shooter are quite new though compared to "real" classic games like fancy point and click adventures.
Im not sure if a bunch of (okay classic) shooters are a good example for "classic". no offense. I love the idear of this thread and yes in parts i definetly agree with the statement that games were better off without fancy graphics.because back then they had a good STORY ;D. All I say is secret of Mana/Evermore haha^^

Quake was made years later than Doom, Doom was quite fun in its time...

I like to play old CRPGs from time to time. NOX, Arcanum and Baldur's Gate are my personal favorites. What i like about the latter of the three is that the character creation in based on AD&D and is thus incredibly open to any character you want to build. I miss that. NOX had a great story and great humor though, just seeing the intro will tell you the story, Installing the game tells you the rest.
In summary, I miss advanced RPGs. The console ports bethesda and bioware are releasing today are fun, but give nowhere near the feeling of accomplishment i felt when my party took down the final boss in Arcanum or when I defeated Hecubah in NOX.

Yikes! eh? surprised to see some of these games are now considered 'classic' or 'retro' (feeling old these days; time flies!)

Nice picks, tsuneko. How about Civilization too? Populous?

I think I spent the most time playing point-and-click adventure games on my PC back in the day. King's Quest, Quest for Glory, Maniac Mansion, etc. I still love them, what a great genre!

I recall playing a lot of stuff I got on Happy Puppy (anyone?) too--not to mention otakuworld. Hunt the Wumpus ate up way too much of my time, hehehe. and the odd MUD for good measure.

guess i probably played more console games than PC overall, though

Guess I should mention the Bulid Engine games, "most" of them were amazing games!
Duke Nukem 3D

Shadow Warrior

Blood

WW2GI

NAM

The last two are beyond awful.

Ah of course, the first monkey island game, skip the cd/dvd remakes and just stick with the last version that has the stump joke, why? Because that joke gets referenced in monkey island 2 and in monkey island 3. Maybe also in Tales of Monkey island, I haven't played that one.

Also, Sam&Max hit the road is pretty damn funny...

Yep, lucasarts made some of the best games in the 90's/80's.
Case and point, Dark Forces 1 & 2

you did need windwos 98, and a specific sound card to play it properly, but it worked fine on my system.

you can find it also for the ps1, which was a bit better that the pc version.

some versions of the game were tough to complete, due to one of the clickies you needed being tiny, and hard to get.

Honestly, the older I get, the more I flock back to classic games. As I type this, I'm thinking about games like Donkey Kong Country 2, Final Fight 3, Super Mario World, Earthworm Jim 2, Super Mario RPG, Knights of the Round, Super Mario 64, and Mega Man 7.
