becuase for some reason everyone loves earthbound, even though its a sub-par game at best.

Although the battle system (save for it's little quirks such as "HP roll down") and general overworld activity is cliche, the atmosphere and story is not -which is what I like in an RPG.

Earthbound was unique in a sense that there isn't many RPGs like it out there. It's hilarious, and it's not so much 'fantasy' like other RPGs - it's set on Earth, and instead of swords and wands, you use weapons such as toy guns, baseball bats, and frying pans, and the items are like regular food (Eat a hamburger to recover HP; eat a Poptart-like object tor recover PP). And the enemies are funny and bizarre (Take the 'New Age Retro Hippie' and 'Unassuming Local Guy' for example.) I mean, come on, you even fight ABSTRACT PAINTINGS and evil road signs. I don't know, but the total bizarreness of this game made me love it so much.


I've been a huge fan of Earthbound for a long time, and was really looking forward to Earthbound 64 when that was announced. A shame it got cancelled, but then THIS news pops up.. needless to say, I am curious and excited. :D

I dunno, I played through a good part of EB. It's an OK game, but FF VI, Secret of Mana, and of course Chrono Trigger have it beat in my opinion.

I still have my original SNES from 1991, in fact, it's sitting right next to me at University with all the old school games.

When you've been in the ROM scene as long as I have, you begin to prefer the keyboard to the original controller.

It's almost...scary. 8O

yea i love my keyboard for roms, i cant play arcade games without it anymore!

For all MAME roms (MvC, fighters, arcade stuff) I use keyboard.

For FF VII, Chrono Trigger and all my other beloved RPG's, I use my gamepad.

Works like a charm.

I need to finish it too, I even have the actual game. It's sitting in my SNES hooked up to my TV but I never finished.

The ending of EarthBound so far ranks under the best ending I've ever experienced.
This is all in my humble opinion though. And all because I liked the ending doesn't mean that you'll like it too.

just wait until you get to the final battle. it seems kinda tricky, like it goes on forever! but, when you get to the last phase, you'll get a subtle hint on what you should do to finish the battle.

Just to those who might possibly be concerned, Mother 3 has an official release date for the lucky folks of Japan.  :-*

I'm gonna hop off the bandwagon here and say my 2 cents.

I've played EB and I must say, it's not appealing at all to me.

The whole fight system and crappy dialogue isn't funny or clever, it's rather annoying.

I'll just stick with the classics such as Chrono Trigger and FF VI (and VI) and remain happy.

Take my opinion for what it's worth, we all have and deserve them. If you like the game, great, play it over and over again!

Yeah, I'm REALLY excited for this. EarthBound was one of my all time favorite games for the SNES. Sure, the battle system completely ripped off Dragon Quest, but it's still a great game. It was a really quirky and humorous, and I loved it. The enemies were fantastic (Master Barf was a riot). The game had fantastic atmosphere and the music was awesome. God, I need to play this again.

And Burke, if you've fully played through it, or at least played as much as you can stomach, then I guess EarthBound's not the game for you. And that works.  ;)

I don't care for Chrono Trigger nor any of the Final Fantasy-s that much, so I guess it all balances out in the universe somewhere. Don't get me wrong, they're for the most part good games. However I have yet to get the type of ending EarthBound has given me from any of those games. ... Although in all honesty, I have yet to beat any of those games. EarthBound is the only RPG I have ever fully completed. ... And chances are it'll probably be the only one.

I'm still thinking HEAVILLY on pre-ordering the GBA Micro pack from play-asia.com ... It'd cost me about $240 which is why I'm thinking hard on it...

I am SO excited for this game. I've been salivating over the newest batch of screenshots. I can say I am more than happy that they're keeping the original style from the first game, as well. If they don't bring this one over for an English release, then I can predict that fans at Starmen.net will translate it, at least.

Oh, what I would do for that Franklin Badge. I hope they'll re-release some Mr. Saturn plushies along the way.

I FINALLY got my copy of Earthbound back, and I've played up to when you get to controll Jeff in Winters. I forgot how much I love this game. Unfortunately, I bought this used from Funco Land (that was a LONG time ago), so no scratch and sniff cards for me. :( Oh, and has anyone heard the official soundtrack? I got it from a friend of mine, and it rocks. It's a couple of select tracks from the game done with real instruments (not MIDI :P).

In EarthBound the game did start off in towns and such, but it also ended up in places that were far-off like deserts, lost worlds, caves, ect...

Mother 3'll possibly follow the same formula. The map isn't probably 100% accurate, nor does it probably show the entire detail of what is out there in the Mother 3 world. I've got to say... This map looks small now, yet there's going to be alot of good stuff in it.  :-*

The landscape in this game appears to vary even moreso than EarthBound's. And in one of the screenshots there appears to be gauge... ugg... Not being able to read the in-game text is going to make that part tough. >_<

Mother 3?? Lol That brings memories swimming back... How good/great this is, Gameboy Advance! I always loved 'Earthbound,' simply because I disliked Final Fantasy and other RPG types. It was such a change from "Knight kills Dark Dragon/Evil Thingus with Mystical Sword on his Quest for Teh Crystal." :P And now it will be released(six, seven years late, but what the heck).

Yep! ^_^ It's hit shelves, and is selling... well... good I woudl assume. ^^;

I'll have some impressions on the game probably around next week or so. According to UPS tracking, my game's in Kentucky right now.

Well, I've played the ROM a bit. If this ever comes stateside,  I'll buy a DS just for this game. Also, a word of advice.

Don't read any spoiler topics at all. Play the game for yourself, ask for help on the starmen.net forums...there are people who have advanced quite a bit in the game, but do not read spoiler topics. The twists in this game are so awesome you need to play the game.

Me? Read spoilers?? OF COURSE I would never do that...

I hope it's story is at least as good as Mother 2's was...
