Well, it depends on what you're trying to get screencaps of. If it's something on your computer, like a web site, computer game, or something you can hit the "Print Screen" key on your keyboard. It's usually to the right of the F12 key, along with Scroll Lock and Pause. This will copy whatever's on the screen at the moment to the clipboard, just like when you copy and paste text. Then just open up any imaging program (even MS Paint will do), hit Paste, and then save the resulting image.
A lot of times, this won't work for movie files or DVDs that you're watching on your computer, because they use a special method to display themselves on the screen. If you try to use the Print Screen key, you'll just get an empty box where the movie was. To get screencaps from movie files like this, you need to use a movie player program that has a "save screencap" feature. With these, you can just pause the movie at the appropriate frame, then hit a "save screenshot" button or command, and it will save the frame as a file for you.
If you want to get a screencap of an external source, like a TV, you need special hardware like a capture card or TV tuner.

You can just hit Ctrl + I to get a screencap in a media player. At least that's the hotkey in Windows Media Player.

And, on the off chance you're using a Mac, there's two different kinds of screen captures you can do.
The first is Shift-Apple-3. This'll take a capture of the whole screen for ya.
The second is Shift-Apple-4, which will allow you to designate the area of the screen that you want a capture of. A little cross hair appears on the screen and you click and drag is around the area you want a picture of.
I'm sure you've already found a solution though, since this topic is over 2 months old.
