Resident Evil 4

OK, I know some of you here are real game experts, while I on the other hand might get some sort of game once a year.  So I'll ask here:  If I get Resident Evil #4, without ever having played any of the previous games in the series, will I be able to understand it?

I have RE4 for my GameCube and it's quite good.

TL;DR - No previous knowledge needed, enjoying blasting zombies with your shotgun.
