And how! Seriously, how a thing like this could go on for this long and be this popular in a country like ours is beyond me... well, maybe I'm just optimistic and naive, but come on people!

Oh... in that case... everything I know sucks... depression hits the suburban dream-life.

If I have kids, there's going to be no TV (not even for me) for the first five years of life.

Why does everyone feel the need to shelter children from everything? If I have children, I'll be prepared to discuss anything with them. It's irresponsible to just avoid everything you're uncomfortable with. Let face the truth, children are going to be exposed to whatever, and it's only worse If they only have their preconceptions to deal with it. Think about it, when children reach their rebellious stage, the first thing is to break all the taboos their parents have established. I didn't have much of rebellious stage because my parents never withheld anything from me. It's not that I was given everything I wanted. It's the little things, like parents who keep locks on their liquor cabinets; you really don't have that much authority over your children If you need to have the lock.

Wow, never thought of it that way... I hope I can use this knowledge to its full potential when I become a parent... IF I become a parent...

Why does everyone feel the need to shelter children from everything?
Because studies have shown that kids that watch TV, even educational TV, learn fewer words in their first 5 years than kids that don't.  It's a proven fact that TV numbs the brain.  There's no interaction, it's just observation.  When a child can't interact in the developmental stages, they can't learn as well.

~Ozzy

Yes, that is true, the TV provides no interaction. The interaction comes from the parents. TV can be a good thing if you're able to sit with your kids and discuss with them what they see on the television. The same goes for video games.

Try worrying about your daughter asking you what a "thong" is. They come standard on every Bratz doll.

The toys promote high physical, sexually driven standards and a bad attitude in young girls... if you're cool with your kids being like that, that's your call. I prefer my daughter has a solid base with good morals and a proper education; not to think she can be some trampy slut singing her way to the top of the ghetto charts.

And BTW Harm, my 4 year old asked me if Mall Santas were real a few weeks ago. Couldn't believe it.

I admitted they weren't real.. but she was a little disappointed, so I told her that they were his helpers.

She'll figure it out on her own eventually. She's a smart kid.

Here here!  If more parents were like you, I think the world would be a better place.  Honestly, I am sick of all the utter crap out there.  It's getting harder and harder to instill good morals in kids.  I'm going to need a lot of wisdom when I become a dad (whenever that is).

Okay, did all my parental advice get shat on? I get it, I don't have kids, so I don't understand. But my argument is only about talking to your kids about things. Ask them why the like a particular TV show or toy. Make certain that they understand the ideas you want them to. Does nobody have time for that?

As for the Bratz dolls, yipes, just yipes.  Shocked

And Santa Mall Helpers, I remember believing that one. Grin

Oh, as a parent you make time for things like that, whether you have it or not. My problem with Lindsay is things like TV advertisements or stuff the other kids like in school. She has no idea who Hanna Montana is, but she can point her out on any type of merchandise from 30 feet away. She doesnt know what Pixos are, but she wants it because the dumb commercials are on 24/7. And she can recognize Bratz, too, because the action figures look like other toys she plays with, and also because of the commercials. They even have a made-for-tv real-life movie on some kid channel. But... if you ask her why she likes those things, all she does is repeat what the commercials suggest. Right now she's at the age of easy influence, and I don't think a lot of parents pay much attention to it. She is literally a sponge so I try to fill all the voids with things she can understand that are good and bad, and why...while also keeping her open-minded towards ways to express herself so she can find out why she likes the things she does.

We went to the mall today and got pictures taken with "Mall Santa", along with a couple other fun activities. I'll have to scan and post the photo later ^^
