Most of you who are members here were never around during the dawning of SPC on the internet. It was a time when AOL was brand new and since Instant Messaging didn't exist yet, everyone made friends and founded their own Private Chat Rooms that were sometimes Invite-Only. This is where I met PrncssVi, Expresso, GuidoDan, SPC Polly and other legends, in the "SPC RPG".

It was the most fun time on the internet that I ever had, and probably ever will. At home, I had to be told to stop laughing so loud because of all the insanity that went on there. And you didn't have to RP to have a good time - it was quite often just a hang-out for fans to have fun together. Trouble is, sometimes we'd get some reeeal stupid characters in there that would crash the fun, and us regulars would tease, make fun of, torture or gang up on them because it was just too easy (This, coincidentally, is when I became a notorious villain ;7 ).

Tonight I happened upon a very old text file that had some quotes from the old chatroom days that apparently still make me laugh aloud. Ah.... good times, good times...

[Private Message Window]SJACK81097:   WHAT CHAT ROOM ARE YOU IN???
Sun Raven9:   SJACK81097: CAN YOU TELL ME WHAT ROOM YOU'RE IN?
Sun Raven9:   Sun Raven9: Super Duper Pizza Cat Fantabulous Land
Sun Raven9:   SJACK81097: YOU CAN'T TYPE THAT IN!!!!
Sun Raven9:     I know >-)

StormEGull:      I'll see eef I cahn't round up mohr Neenjah Crows to joeen my ahrmee...I lohv wrreekeeng havohc

SPC Polly:    I do not have a short temper thank you!

Chaos Fox:   ::gets a camera ready:: This is going to america's funniest videos

X Ducane X:      :::::speeds 5 willpower....RIP THE MAN BODY::::::::
PrncssVi:           PrcssVi rolled 2 999-sided dice: Duncane is crushed by dice

ShopAtAmes:   Are you on crack

TekoMeat:           teko:Oh a potato..i'm bubbleing with joy..

GdoAnchovi:   lol, Ex: Slinky never survived around me
GdoAnchovi:   It got tangled, I tried to untagle, it broke!
GdoAnchovi:   That and I swung it around, smashing things    =)

KattSWKT:   Look, If I had a choice, I would have went after Speedy! But he wasn't online!

Speedi9753:   but..but.. ::Cant see himself playing with little ponies::

Aster Crow:   And Quote of the week: "Expresso01: To get really shiney teeth, ya gotta buff'em good with floor cleaner"

It sorta makes me wish the Edo board had a web-based chatroom for all our ridiculous shenanigans....

I was around at the beginning, but I couldn't find you guys.  I guess I really don't have a right to post here.  The sad thing is that I see chats similar in style to that everywhere today, and that such attitudes (referring to the troll types) were apparently common in the "good" days.

By web-based chat rooms, do you mean those live ones that are basically like instant messengers?  How hard are they to program?

There was no such term as "trolling" back then. It was just called "obnoxious". And there was a feature in the chat that allowed you //roll dice that some people used for RP'ing... which was just ridiculous. Vi and I had a jolly good time making fun of those people  Polly Wink Though, we had our own private room so we didn't get much interference from all that.

As far as web-based chatrooms.... no clue how to program them, but I think there are websites that you can sign up for that will allow you to host their javascript in your webpage.

Haha, at that time my only knowledge of computers was playing the simple math game off a Floppy Disk. The internet? What is this internet we speak of? The internet had no application to me for many long years. Of course I had no need. School research? The library or Encarta 1997. Friends? Face to face is always nice. Video Games? Real sports have always been better.

Yeah, I didn't even discover the internet forum until I was 11 or 12. The internet was a very late discovery for me but probably less worthwhile. So much undesirable content floating the web... *shiver*

What a nice discovery.  I don't think I saved any of those, and I've been through several computers since then.  The Pizza Cats Review newsletter started off back in those days as our RP group news.
What Aster said about the "really stupid people" was referring to people who joined us but then played totally un-SPC like.  For example; trying to use realistic violence as opposed to comedy violence, or coming in with characters from some other show/movie/game.  It's not that everyone was expected to play a character from the show, I'd say the majority had their own made up character (Aster and Expresso for example) but they were SPC-type characters and stayed in the spirit of the show.  Anyway, I really had little tolerance for people who wanted to join a SPC RP group to play "Men in Black" or whatever else was trendy at that moment, and I often was not nice about it.
Playing Vi online for so long created an online alter-ego which really never went away.  Off line I'm quiet and shy, online I totally took up being like Violet, bossing people around, being temperamental, often sarcastic, sometimes acting cute.  When we began to be more in contact with fans outside the group, some people didn't realize I was just "being in character" and thought I really was a mean bossy person, so I've toned it down a bit.  But even today I'm still "Violet" online, especially with people who know not to take me too seriously.

Wow and just to think that was like 10 years ago ... back when I was pushing my cars around my scalextrix track Grin

I only used the Internet to play games on the CartoonNetwork site ... I started to use the Internet fully in 2003

But looks at those chat logs that Aster posted, it looks like it was real fun back then, without MSN / AIM / Y!M / ICQ / Facebook / MySpace / Bebo ... If only everything was as simple like that now

Actually, I think that it all started around 1995-6... You do the math.

The chatroom was loads of fun though. I remember one night Vi and I battled against each other (which was unheard of because we both owned the label "Never Mess With Her- Or Else") and everyone was shocked as Vi walloped me with a mallet through a wall in the Emporium to end the fight. That was funny Grin

We had "AIM" but the "A" is for "AOL" and you only had it if you had an AOL account (Which wasn't free in those days, it was your ISP which you used your 33.6k modem to dial up) and you could only chat with other people on AOL (for the first few years until AIM was released for general use).  If more than 2 people wanted to chat, you'd find or make a chat room (Also an AOL feature).

There was another group of SPC fans around in those days who used IRC chat.  I went there a few times, but it was usually like a chat version of "The longest thread" here with rarely any SPC related discussion.  That still survives (sort of), look on the top right of this page.  I don't know if anyone still uses it.  Most of the people in the early original irc #samuraipizzacats lost interest and moved on.  There's probably a few of them around still, but one feature IRC has that AOL didn't was the ability to change your screen name as much as you wanted, so it was harder to keep track of them.

Probably more around 96-97 because that's when SPC was on in the US.  Although we continued on for quite some time after the show went off the air.

The one thing I missed about back when was that old message board that I use to be part of. Me, BurkeWorld, BlackCat, D-Mac, and many others back in SPC_Fan's message board. Smiley

God I miss those days.

I can remember poking my head into one or two of the SPC chat rooms back in the before times, but I was (and am) much too asocial to actually say much, so I didn't stick around for long.  What I remember more is the SPC thread in the old Cartoon Network forum on AOL.  We even had CN expressing interest for a bit.  Pity nothing came of it
