Metroid : Other M
"Any objections lady?" : Adam Malkovich
One sf the hardest things about writing, is figuring out what to write.
It's especially difficult when your mind wants to write something, yet your heart isn't in it.
That's for the most part my feeling in this attempt to write my thoughts of this game. Metroid : Other M, is the latest story in a Bounty Hunter known as Samus Aran. In the game universe's chronological order, it takes place immediately after Super Metroid.
Samus is out in space, lost in thought and reflection after her most recent brush with death at the hands of the Space Pirates in Super Metroid. The battle has taken a toll on her emotionally, leaving her unstable. While out, she intercepts a distress signal, and proceeds towards it. Fully unaware of what lies in wait.
The game is what I'd call a 3D Game with more similarities to Resident Evil. The camera is fixed when you enter into a room, however it does follow you giving you a decent view of the entire room.
The controls are very responsive while Samus remains in 3rd Person Mode. However, there are moments where you have to shift Samus into a 1st Person Mode to do certain tasks. The controls work well in this, however they're highly awkward to use in actual gameplay.
The music has it's moments. It's better than the bleeps and bloops from the GameBoy, however it doesn't feel right. I could just be being too picky though…
The visuals are top notch. Each enemy has been crafted with superb attention, and moves like I'd expect a creature that looks like that to.
The Good : Most parts of the game have been assembled with plenty of care. In some ways, the story expands the Metroid universe a little more in directions that could turn out good.
The Bad : Re-use of multiple key villains from previous Metroid games. Renaming an "Assassin" to "The Delete-or" is one of the most ridiculous things I've ever heard. To partially quote StrongBad "…you really can't go wrong with anything that starts with d-e. 'Cept for maybe… Dentist! Deli-style!"
http://www.homestarrunner.com/sbemail141.htmlThe Ugly : The story, the story, the story, and the story. I feel what they were trying to do with Samus in this game was bring out the human side of the character that we never fully see in most of her adventures. Technically, the timing of such would be just right after the events of Super Metroid. However I feel the execution of it was all wrong. Also, the death of an important character whom she relates to deeply was in my opinion done poorly.
ALSO … The weapon and suit upgrade system. This my dear readers, is why common sense is dying. That is all I will say here.
Now comes the hard part.
I personally cannot recommend this game. I just can't. Spend your money elsewhere.
I do recommend Super Metroid, and the Metroid Prime series… Well… Prime 1 and 3 anyway.
Now… I'm going to attach a separate document to this post that details most of my problems with Metroid Other M to this post. This document is going to contain SPOILERS to the game. Do not read it unless you've completed the game, or do not care.
Thank you for taking the time to read, and good gaming. ^_^
