It took me way longer than I had hoped for, but I've finally released my translation patch for the game. Features include:

* Upper and lowercase text;
* A super awesome title screen;
* A fully translated script with no shortcuts taken (thanks to MottZilla and his efforts to expand the game ROM);
* A made up translation created in the spirit of the show, by a fan, for the fans;
* An awesome rendition of the Samurai Pizza Cats title tune by Optomon;
* Fully translated credits including the character names that show up under their portraits.

The translation is done, for free, for everyone. I have no idea if this game will work on flashcarts, hopefully it will. Have fun, enjoy, and whatnot.

Interested, but I'm one of those people too dumb to understand how this xdelta patcher thing works.  Not a gamer, just a Pizza Cats fan.

I did play this through in Japanese many years ago, but that was like 2-3 computers ago and I don't have that software anymore.  I do own the actual game cartridge, but just as a KNT collectable, got nothing to play it on.

The patch must be applied with an XDelta patcher.
 If you're too dumb to understand this, well, that's your problem.

That's aggressive... Well, I was about to try this but you killed my mood...

Agh. Sorry. Both of you, please accept my apologies. I didn't mean to offend anyone.

Grab this.

http://www.romhacking.net/utilities/598/

It's a GUI frontend, and it makes things easier.

I apologize for the tone of the readme, I uploaded this quickly and was tired when I wrote that. The readme has been amended to include that line.

I'm not offended, you're just used to dealing with other people who do this sort of stuff and understand all this.  I'm not one of those people, I don't have a clue about this stuff.

So, I have my old KNT.NES, this patch of yours, and the program you posted above.  But using the patch, my old .NES file, I just get an error "target window checksum mismatch: XD3_INVALID_INPUT"

In any case I don't have anything to play a .NES on on this computer.

Yes, it appears the problem is that your file is old. It's probably an earlier version with changed data. If I recall correctly, the game was originally copied to rom format with an incorrect game header, which was later fixed. There was also a website that had a horrible habit of adding their address to the end of every game, and it could've come from that place.

In any case, you can find the correct version under the name "Cattou Ninden Teyandee (J)", usually in zip format. The correct version has a CRC32 value of 6F1485ED. This is normally displayed when you open the zip file in a program like Winrar or Winzip.

I never considered anyone would have so much trouble with this. I'm used to dealing with people who have been playing patches for years... then again, this happened to me back in the day with my Dragon Ball Z patches, haha.

I'll write a tutorial on how to patch the game shortly.

Edit: Here you go.

http://www.foxhack.net/trans/kyattou-ninden-teyandee/patching-instructions/

Hopefully that's clear enough, I'm really bad at writing instructions.

Edit again: I had to rebuild the patch due to problems with the older version, you now have to use a different version of the game - a much better version, anyway. Sorry again.

Question: Why not just use IPC patching? I've never heard of xDelta, is it common amoung ROM Patching?

Question: Why not just use IPC patching? I've never heard of xDelta, is it common amoung ROM Patching?
Size and legality concerns, as well as preventing people from patching the wrong game.

IPS patches are better suited for files that have the same size. For example, let's say we have two text files that contain a line of text.

File 1: This pasta is delicious!
File 2: This candy is delicious!

An IPS program would compare both files, notice the different word, and make a patch that changes "pasta" to candy. But the finished hack ended up with a file size that was much larger than the original...

File 1: This pasta is delicious!
File 2: This candy... I've never seen anything like it! It's delicious!

An IPS program would compare both files, notice the differences... and make a patch that changes "pasta" to "candy... I've never seen anything like it! It's delicious!"

Not only would the IPS patch be huge, it would also contain unmodified data from the game (the bit of text "s delicious!"), so it could get me in trouble because I'm unintentionally including data from a commercial game. You know how crazy lawyers can get.

Plus, the modifications that MottZilla made to the game basically created a copy of the main program data in the middle of the game file, which made the IPS program create patches that had most of the game inside them! XDelta has built-in routines that basically say "Move stuff from here to here, leave this part alone, then apply the changes". They turned a 300 kb IPS file with most of the game inside to a 20-odd kb file that only had the changes.

Hope that made sense. It's 8 AM and I need my coffee. :p
